Appalachian State University (Elementary Education)
I am a kindergarten teacher in Raleigh. I love working with kids and love helping them learn and grow. I have had experience teaching in both elementary schools and preschools. I've also worked in after school programs for tutoring.
I feel that I have a talent for tutoring because I work well with helping students find answers for themselves. I help them build the confidence that they can teach themselves and I help them build a love for learning that can last a lifetime.
I love math. It was always my favorite subject in school. I like to make math fun and think outside the box when I teach it to my kids at school. I also make sure that I teach the math concepts rather than just a formula or skill.
I've had a lot of experience teaching children to read in kindergarten and first grade. When I first started teaching reading, I was nervous about it, because I thought, how can I teach someone who hardly even knows the alphabet to read complete books. But I've learned a lot of tricks in teaching reading and making reading and phonics fun. Kids want to read and I'm just there to support them as they try it.
I went to college for elementary education and learned many different strategies and techniques for teaching and tutoring math, reading, writing, science, social studies, and the arts.
I've had years of experience teaching phonics. I've used all kinds of programs, games, and even songs to help teach phonics.
I love teaching and learning myself. I believe that learning should be fun and I try to always make it that way. Schedule your lessons with me to have fun while you are learning! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I graduated from Appalachian state university with a degree in elementary education. While in college, I learned techniques and strategies to effectively teach academics in grades k-6. Since college, I have worked in both public and private schools teaching kindergarten through fourth grade.
I have been a teacher in kindergarten for the past two years. I have also taught in first and second grade. One of the most important subjects that I teach in kindergarten is phonics. I have used different programs, games and techniques to effectively teach phonics to my students and know a variety of ways to teach the subject and make it interesting.
