About Barbara

I have earned my Masters in Educational Leadership with 20+ years of public classroom instruction. My students improve in ELA and math skills in a fun and stress-free environment. I truly care about my students obtaining academic success while developing the self-confidence to meet all challenges head on! I use differentiated lessons to accommodate all learning styles, levels, special needs, etc.

As a retired NYS practical examiner and instructor for cosmetology in both the written and practical exams, my lessons will provide the support to graduated students struggling to pass the state boards. (Note: Students must have attended an accredited beauty school to sit for the boards.) My students are very successful in passing both the written and practical exam; I provide supplies for the practical tutoring.

I will do my best to accommodate your schedule. Try me!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I taught trade Special Education for 15 years. I have also raised three sons (diagnosed with ADHD) who are attending top rated universities. Lastly, I have the patience and passion for helping my students.

In the field of cosmetology, one must meet a minimum of 70% to pass a state exam. As the instructor of the sciences of cosmetology for over 20 years, anatomy is crucial in ensuring students' competencies during the practical lessons in order to demonstrate understanding.

My Bachelor's degree was a concentration in organizational management which included several courses in business and laws.

In addition I am a previous owner of a salon in Queens, New York for 17 years. This included keeping excellent records, inventory, taxes, hiring/firing employees and payroll, and customer relations. My extensive experience lie in marketing, the law of supply & demand, advertising, the branches of government and and other governmental agencies.

Last, I am an NYS permanently certified high school teacher which includes experience in teaching business courses.

Career Development

As an instructor of cosmetology in Day High School in the NYCDOE, for over 20 years, I have a great deal of experience in training students with career development. Some of the skills taught and emphasized include interviewing skills (role play); preparing a resume; defining the types of business ownership available; developing project based learning (PBL) business portfolio: This portfolio contains many pertinent documents required when entering the workforce such as: The demographics, target market, growth chart, computer skills, soft skills, advertising campaigns, business cards/flyers and many more relevant tasks for building and developing character and ethical behaviors in the work place.

College Counseling

While teaching seniors in high school, I was involved in attending college fairs with my students. I also assisted students in filling out their FAFSA application, applying for TAP, and submitting applications for undergrad admissions. I learned how to complete the FAFSA application and meet deadlines through the experience with my own three children.

As a licensed NYS Cosmetologist, I am also a certified NYS Teacher of Cosmetology in Day High School. I have taught in the NYC Dept.of Ed for over 20 years.
My strengths lie in theory for passing the written portion of the cosmetology exam as well as practical skills at every level.
In addition, I became a NYS Practical Examiner 10 years ago. However, I still remain actively working in the salon to learn up and coming new styles.
Last, I took the long road in relation to formal education but I paid my way through first with my AAS in Occupational Education from NYIT; my BS in Organizational Mgmt.; and my MSEdL-Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Western Governors University.
I have a great deal of patience and excellent communication skills for driving the objectives of the lesson across.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have my Master's degree in education and over 20 years teaching in the NYC Board of Education. I also raised three children; my first son is graduating one year early from SUNY Albany; my second son is attending SUNY Buffalo in the medical program; and my third son is attending SUNY-ESF in the Biochemistry program.

As a teacher for Career and Technical Education, students enter with a wide range of ELA skills. Having raised three children, and working with a self-contained special education curriculum for over 10 years, I am successful in bringing the reading skills up to meeting core standards. I have the passion for helping children and adults with phonics, reading comprehension, and guiding students to remain on task.

Sign Language

I have been a NYS licensed teacher for over 20 years. I studied American Sign Language in order to communicate with the students I had with hearing impairments who knew ASL. In addition, I taught all three of my children who are very proficient in ASL.

Special Needs

As a permanently certified NYS teacher of CTE in public high school, I have extensive experience working with students with special needs ranging from physical, developmental, emotional, learning disabilities, as well as other facets that go on an IEP. I have a great deal of patience working with students because of the differentiated teaching and learning styles. I am successful because I do believe in multiple intelligences for succeeding towards ones goals.

Study Skills

Teaching today involves differentiated lessons (usually 3-4 levels/activities) on the same topic/unit. Students do not all learn with the same modalities, and therefore, different styles/levels must be taught in order for students to absorb the most out of each lesson taught. We do this as adults (write things down pen/paper, text reminder, tablet note, etc. and we must prepare students to do the same when studying; Examples: Define terms 1. dictionary 2. your own. 3. picture, write terms 3x, use term in your own sentence, mix/match , multiple choice, fill in, hands on, and many more!

I am certainly qualified in meeting the tutoring standards for students as a graduate from a Masters program in Educational Leadership. This included having my 63 page thesis getting published! I also graduated with Suma Cum Laude with my undergraduate degree. I enjoy writing and having my audience experience the story no matter what the assignment is.
