About Philip

I grew up on a farm in Oklahoma. I have three daughters, the youngest of whom is a rising senior at NC State University. I'm a widower. Prior to moving to North Carolina in 1987 I worked in New York City for the New York Shakespeare Festival as a sound technician.

I've been a member of the Department of History faculty at North Carolina State University for the past 25 years. When I was earning my doctorate at Duke U I was also teaching. My Ph.D. is in European history. I also teach modern American history for Strayer University, as well as World Cultures from the ancient world to modern times and World Religions. My background in history is both deep and broad.
I also spent two decades working as a free-lance music journalist, writing for publications such as Billboard, Wired, NatGeo's World Music website, CDnow, and No Depression. I served for four years as the Arts Editor and a copy editor for Spectator magazine in Raleigh and was a featured columnist for a decade for the Durham Herald-Sun newspaper. I took and passed the Associated Press copy editing examination several years ago as well. I am well-schooled, by virtue of practical experience, with all phases of Language Arts, from reading skills to English grammar to proofreading.
I've also spent the past 25 years critiquing and grading students' terms papers in my faculty role at North Carolina State University.

I believe that tutoring would allow me to help students learn to think effectively about history. I'm confident that I can aid students in retaining information, preparing for history exams and improve their grades in history classes. Tutoring is appealing because it offers a chance to work with students on an individual basis. Students generally benefit from this sort of one-on-one learning experience, plus the experience will doubtless improve my effectiveness as a teacher.

I happen to be a very effective history teacher because I understand that history is, first and foremost, storytelling, and I'm a good storyteller. History students are inevitably confronted with a large block of information in a history class. I'm used to dealing with great chunks of historical information and sorting out the key points for students. Teaching for several universities has given me the opportunity to teach both U.S. history and world history, which has increased my understanding of the content and framework of a good many cultural histories.

My classroom experience teaching history is vast at this point in time. I can help improve your grasp of history and your history grades. Do get in touch if you need a history tutor and we'll work out something. My tutoring rate is $65 per hr.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

For the past eight years I've been teaching Humanities - specifically, World Cultures from the Ancient World to the Renaissance, for Strayer University. This includes, of course, the art, literature and history of the Ancient World.

I've also taught the first half of the Western Civ sequence at both Duke U and North Carolina State U.

Religion

I've been teaching World Religions for Strayer University for the past eight years.
In addition, I have in excess of 18 graduate hours in Religion (featured in my Duke U graduate transcript).
My dissertation topic was a work of historical-theology titled The Chaste Heart: Martin Luther and the Discourse on Marriage and Celibate Practice in Christian Theology, 1521-1563.
