About Antonio

I received my Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of North Florida and recently I completed the teacher licensure program at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. I can provide documentation for both my Bachelor's Degree at UNF and my completion of the licensure program at UNCA.

Currently I am a substitute teacher for Buncombe County Schools but prior to that I student-taught at North Buncombe High School. During my student teaching I administered curriculum to three 9th grade English Language Arts classes. The curriculum I created was always in alignment with the North Carolina Common Core State Standards and accounted for multiple intelligences and learning styles while simultaneously accommodating students with special needs.

For two semesters I worked with the AVID tutoring program through UNCA. In the program I met with agroups of two to four students at Asheville High School twice a week to assist their learning in a variety of subjects.

While living in Florida I was a volunteer tutor for English Language Learners. I met with two adult students twice a week and designed exercises and activities to assist them in a more thorough understanding of the language.

What I love about tutoring is that it gives me the opportunity to get to know my students on a one-to-one basis. I also love the fact that as a tutor I can tailor the curriculum to meet the specific needs of an individual student, one thing I have learned it is that constructing curriculum which appeals to and engages a class of thirty students can be challenging at times. When I tutor with a single student I can tailor the curriculum to meet that student's specific needs.

I am very passionate about the subject I teach. I have always been an avid reader and encourage all of my students to read in their free time. I believe that there is a book out there for everyone! I think that a well-rounded vocabulary and proper pronunciation are vital in developing listening and speaking skills, which is another benefit of reading. During my lessons I set aside three to five minutes for my students to write without stopping, usually in response to a prompt that relates to a theme/central idea of a text. This exercises is very important in piquing a student's interest in a theme or topic in a text and also serves as means to activate their background knowledge. This exercise is also a means for me to assess the student's knowledge of topic for later lessons.

Other resources that I use are podcasts and songs. Podcasts are a great way to engage a student in the content we are studying and are both informative and entertaining. I use various songs as a way to convey elements of literature and literary devices (tone, theme, mood, etc.). I have found that using music is a great way to connect a student to various literary concepts that may seem difficult to grasp at first.

In my free time I enjoy reading, writing, hiking, and canoeing/kayaking. The majority of my free time, however, is spent with my incredible two-year-old son Ezra.

I am looking forward to meeting and working with my future students! I cannot wait to read, write, listen to music, and learn with them!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
