University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill (Journalism)
Hello everyone, my name is Lawrence. I am a 45-year-old male with a passion for language, communication, and teaching. I think it is a wonderful thing when someone can communicate effectively with another person, and it is through good communication that we all learn.
I have a bachelor's degree in journalism from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to training as a journalist, I studied Italian and linguistics.
Within the past eight years I discovered my passion for language and teaching, and I acquired five years of experience as a one-on-one E.S.L. instructor in a private language institute. I worked with a variety of ages from 13 to 70. I have been studying Spanish on my own for the past two years and this summer took a Spanish class through my local community college's continuing education program. My goal for increasing my knowledge of Spanish is to become a better teacher of E.S.L. to native Spanish speakers.
My students have been pleased with the creative and practical approach that I use. I believe that humor, fun and variety are important parts of a learning experience, is it keeps the student engaged and relaxed. Structure, goals, and appropriate materials customized to the individual are of course also important.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a bachelor's degree in journalism from one the leading public universities in North Carolina - U.N.C.-Chapel Hill. I worked for one year on of the most prestigious college newspapers in the nation - "The Daily Tarheel". My time spent teaching English as a Second Language has also given me additional insight into English. My method is to try put the subject on the students level, and try to reduce any intimidation they may have felt in the past.
I have taught ESL to LatinAmerican adults with a range of levels, from basic to advanced, for nearly 4 years. This was an immersion method in an one-on-one setting. A main part of succeeding with my students was to keep variety in the lessons, and to only introduce material that the students were ready for. Encouraging students' small successes is critical to keeping students engaged and motivated.
