About Mary

Hello! I am a Latin teacher, turned mom. In my first six years of teaching I developed a dynamic Latin middle school program, inspired students to love Latin through precise and creative teaching methods, devoted my planning time to tutoring individual students who struggled in Latin, and led students to be highly successful on the AP Latin Literature, AP Vergil and the AP Latin test for five years. After my first child was born I switched to primarily online tutoring so as to be at home with him during the day. Since then I have over two years of experience tutoring online. I gained experience in this format online especially after giving individual lessons to 3 children in the same family 5 days per week for 2 full years. I continue to foster my love of love of Latin by tutoring, teaching, editing and translating Latin.

My knowledge of Latin helped me achieve a perfect English score on the SAT in high school. I then graduated summa cum laude, with the highest GPA in the class of 2007 at University of Dallas. I received a B.A. in Classical Philology in Latin, with minor in Greek.

My favorite types of students to tutor are those who are having problems in the language or those who simply love the language and are hungry to learn more. I have experience with and love for teaching students of all ages, from preschool to college-age.

My favorite Latin authors are Cicero (whose life I studied extensively for my senior thesis project) and Thomas More (whose writings I've been translating and editing for the past 6 years). I am currently reading Vergil's Fourth Eclogue with a group of high school students.

I love to break down the problems of a difficult language for students and continually seek to find new ways to make the hardest things understandable to them.

From years of experience working with over 300 students I am able to analyze and solve the problems a student is having in Latin. I use a variety of techniques (work on rote memory, songs, drills, grammar analysis, etc.) to improve a student's ability in the language.

I cannot solve the problems with the cooperation of the student: therefore, I demand the student's attention during tutoring sessions and oftentimes require extra work between sessions.

I communicate a student's progress regularly and honestly.

Please contact me if you are serious about studying Latin!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Flute

I studied flute under private instructors for over 15 years. I have played the flute in various ensembles in high school and college. I gave private flute lessons for several years.

Latin

Graduated summa cum laude, with highest GPA in class of 2007 at University of Dallas. Received a B.A. in Classical Philology in Latin, with minor in Greek. Taught and tutored Latin for 8 years.

Great Tutor

I am very much pleased with Mary's patience and interaction with 7 year old. My daughter is very much enjoying her Latin lessons and looks forward to them. Teaching a younger student via Skype can be a bit challenging but Mary has made the process enjoyable for her. She is starting to open up and interact with her. I look forward to watching my daughter embrace the Latin language.
