About Paula

Hi, I'm Paula and I love languages!

I have worked as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher for 5 years and tutored children, college students and adults in English, Spanish and Portuguese. As a result, I have created effective lessons that allow students to progress in their learning goals.

I am passionate about languages which is why I majored in Modern Languages. My goal is to empower the student to acquire a better understanding of the language and to be able to communicate effectively.

I believe developing excellent written and verbal skills is crucial for everybody. Whether you are a middle schooler struggling with Spanish, a high schooler prepping for the SAT's or an adult eager to learn a new language, the bottom-line is: communication skills will help you get ahead.

I have seen in my own life how many doors were opened because I have acquired effective knowledge of English and Spanish. I am very thankful for the many teachers that have helped me and I love being able to help students in the same way.

What topic is your child struggling with? What is your goal in learning a new language? Let's create a learning strategy to help you achieve your goals!

Feel free to contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have tutored students in the topics covered in the ACT English, such as essay writing and grammar. I Identified each student’s individual needs and created lessons to help them achieve their academic goals.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL for four years while I was living in Brazil. My experience includes teaching students from all ages. In college, I majored in Modern Languages, with a focus on English and American literature. This is why I make my lessons engaging and interesting, adding elements of literature and culture.

Portuguese

I have tutored foreign students in Portuguese while I was living in Brazil. As a child, I was taught English and Portuguese simultaneously, so I have a native proficiency in both languages. I also majored in Modern Languages, which allowed me to immerse in Brazilian and Portuguese literature. I use elements of Brazilian and Portuguese culture to enrich classes and students' knowledge.

Public Speaking

I was the top student in my Public Speaking class in college. In that class, I was the team leader for a major group project and earned a perfect score on the assignment while coaching my teammates to earn A's as well. I was invited to speak at a local Women's History Month panel and since then I have utilized my public speaking skills in my own career.

Reading

I have tutored students in the topics covered in the ACT and SAT English, such as essay writing, grammar and reading comprehension. I Identified each student’s individual needs and created lessons to help them achieve their academic goals. Moreover, I am a well-read teacher, passionate about literacy and literature. I work hard to instill a love for reading in my students.

SAT Writing

I have tutored students in the topics covered in the writing portion of the SAT such as grammar, reading comprehension and essay writing. I usually start by Identifying the student’s individual needs and, from there, I create a lesson to help them achieve their academic goals.

Spanish

I have tutored students in Spanish topics, developing active skills in speaking and writing while increasing comprehension in listening and speaking. I have a bachelor's degree in Modern Languages and extensive knowledge of Spanish/South American literature and culture which I use to enrich lessons. I have also traveled to Spain where I acquired proficiency in the language.
