Your first lesson is money back guaranteed if not totally satisfied, and I will give you a guaranteed improvement on SAT/ACT if you agree to the number of hours I recommend, and do all homework. (if we fail, I will meet you free until you succeed) Generally my students were able to raise their score 10-20% in one + month of meetings and practice. (e.g., from 1000 to 1200 SAT, 25 to 28 ACT)

The SAT consists of a finite number of skills and disciplines, all coachable. The SAT is not an intelligence test, it is a skills test. For example, linear equations occur in word problems about money and work time, graphs that must be interpreted, and systems of equations that must be solved or analyzed. Seeing these three categories as similar leads to immediate recognition of a problem type, and a finite number of questions that are asked about it. These questions are usually about the y-intercept, (e.g.: would the cost of maintaining a vehicle be $0 if gas were free?) the slope, (e.g.: if the cost of gasoline increases by $1 per gallon, what is the total increase for the vehicle maintenance for the year?) and the mathematical analysis. (e.g.: what is an equation that represents the total maintenance costs for this vehicle for one year?) If a student masters just this problem type and the three questions, about 15-20% of the SAT math section will become manageable and simple. I love tutoring because I can help bring young people from a place of stress and pressure to determination and confidence. Just as with athletics or music, this is a matter of clear goals, disciplined practice, and strategic focus.

Engineering is physics applied to the real world. The skills gleaned from the orderly vision and approach to physics problems are the foundation to attack all engineering problems as well. Representing the problem visually through a drawing that includes only the essentia

GRE

GRE

I have a BS in Civil Engineering, and have been tutoring CEE, ACT, SAT, and other subjects for about the past 5 years. The math on the GRE is not terribly challenging, but there are specific subjects that are the staple of the exam... The GRE is a subject in its own right, and should be studied for as such.

Corporate Training

Spanish

Spanish

I have lived in the Dominican Republic for 7 years, gaining fluency by experience, and have taught languages at many different levels... most Recently I lived in Barcelona, Spain for over a month, taking an ESL class, but speaking Spanish every day.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

I taught University Academic Writing among second-language learners, requiring constant re-teaching of grammar and syntax, including what's on the ACT English. Recently I passed a 160-hour ESL course by Cambridge English Language Training Associates in Barcelona, Spain.
Writing,

Writing

I taught Academic Writing and Speech (in English) at PUCMM University, Santiago, D.R. for three years. I have written an article published in Mission Frontiers Magazine. I have been tutoring in SAT and ACT writing for 5 years. Edited and wrote for student newspaper, Regent College, Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Bible Studies,

Bible Studies

I studied 3.5 years with Eugene Peterson, Bruce Waltke, Gordon Fee, J.I. Packer, etc. Regent College is an Evangelical graduate school of Christian studies in Vancouver, B.C. Since then I have been a youth pastor, primary pastor to two Presbyterian congregations, and a missionary and trainer of church planters in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Lesvos Greece, and North Carolina. I have taught Bible in a Christian school in Santiago, Dominican Republic for two years as well.
Religion

Religion

I earned a 3.5 year M.Div. at Regent College, Vancouver, B.C., Canada in 1995. My Undergrad B.A. at University of IL (1986) was US History with a minor in Philosophy and Religious Studies.

Physics,

Physics

Physics is the breaking down of real-world problems into pieces in which we can understand motion, energy, power, force, current, etc. The key to success in physics is mental hygiene, not talent. We need to make simple drawings that show the nature of the question, and use numbers and units in a way that they remind us if we are straying from the shortest path. Solving one problem in three ways, e.g., graphically, by equations, and by derivation from simpler concepts, gives us a robust grasp of the nature of the concept. Relating all bookish concepts like "acceleration", or "gravity" to realities like "at what angle would I throw a baseball in order for it to travel the longest distance?" makes physics more tangible to the average person. basketball is therefore a sport for advanced physicists to work on the best possible trajectories.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I earned a 33 in both math and science on the ACT (in High School) which was 99th percentile in the state and the US. But when I began teaching others who struggled in math and science, I was humbled by the challenge... After several years of studying and coaching the SAT, I realized that every skill and aptitude tested by the SAT is coachable--none requires outrageous talent. For example, the math never goes above simple algebra. The principle challenge is to know what skills will be required, and have strategies for problem solving and more importantly, time management. A system of linear equations can be solved at least three ways. If you know all three, you have a full toolkit as far as seeing which path is quickest to an answer. But knowing how to pull the right tool out of the bag is the key to solving it in 30 seconds instead of 5 minutes. The SAT is really about time-management, confidence, and simple endurance. I can coach you to become an SAT athlete with not only skills, but also the reps to finish in accord with your goals.

But when I began teaching others who struggled in math and science, I was humbled by the challenge... Every skill and aptitude tested by the ACT is coachable, but not necessarily encountered in math class. The ACT does not test math capacity only, but creative thinking and problem solving, choosing strategies wisely, and most of all, time management and efficiency. As a coach of many sports as well as subjects, my focus is directing your practice so that you put your mind in "excellent condition" so that the ACT becomes a natural and simple part of daily practice, rather than a stress and fear-filled leap from a precipice.
Civil Engineering,

Civil Engineering

The key to engineering success is consistent and robust process in problem solving--breaking down complex problems to simple steps, and taking the simplest possible route, communicating with symbols, drawings, and numbers, so we don't confuse ourselves or our evaluators. I have been tutoring university students in Civil Engineering hundreds of hours with 5/5 ratings. I was repeatedly Dean's List at University of IL. college of Civil Engineering, and worked two years for the USGS doing water-quality monitoring and data collection, then a year at two consulting firms. I spent six years developing my own contracting business into a city contractor and engineering design consultancy.

Waste of time and money

Spend the whole class time( 1 hour) doing one problem. His teaching style is not my preference because I had to do a portion of the problem. I learned nothing from the class period

Ali, 1 lesson with Michael
Tutor responded:

Im sorry your experience was not good for you, Ali... of course if you were not satisfied, you could have appealed to me or to Wyzant for a refund... we actually only met 46 minutes, and I charged you for 45. Throughout the lesson, I asked you what you wanted to do, then did it... my teaching style is to guide you while YOU do the work, because my goal is that you learn and become the expert...

Excellent tutor

Michael went step by step through the important blurbs of Chapter 12 of ASCE. He is a patient and detail-oriented tutor. He explained each section to the best of his knowledge and made it easily graspable for tutorees. Highly recommend.

Saint Michael the Tutor

Honestly, without the help of Michael's vast knowledge, I would be lost in my civil engineering metal and wood design class. He is a great tutor that is adaptable to many learning styles. In addition, you will receive dedication and patients to help you understand each concept. His reputation for being a Saint lives to the exceptions. I appreciate all the hard work and help.
