About Lauren

My goal as a tutor is to use the material in your current course to help you or your child learn how to study more effectively. Being confident and well prepared is a valuable skill, but each person must discover their own best way to study. We'll find your best approach while focusing on the content of your math or science course (or the SAT). Practice tests and EOG/EOCs (with answers) will give the confidence you or your child need to do well in class. My students are more likely to compare me to their sports coaches than their teachers because of my focus on building skills and helping them work independently. In the seven years that I have been tutoring, my students have primarily been from Green Hope, Panther Creek, and Enloe high schools.

My journey into tutoring started as an undergraduate, when I was often asked by classmates to explain concepts and examples from class. I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2005 with a BS in applied sciences (with a concentration in biomedical engineering). As a graduate student in biomedical engineering, I was lucky enough to be a teaching assistant for senior design. When I had to take time off from my graduate studies, tutoring was the natural choice so I could continue to teach. Tutoring allowed me to continue to work with students and make meaningful contributions to their education, although the subject changed from design to math and sciences. Over the past seven years I helped many students. Now I balance tutoring and research because I find both of them immensely enjoyable.

I have taken graduate level math and science courses as part of my degree, which I feel helps my students because I can tell them how the math they are taking now will relate to future courses and their chosen career path. I have tutored math from third grade all the way to AP statistics, AP calculus, and calculus 3.

If you have any questions about my approach to tutoring or if you have any specific needs (I've worked with many students with learning disabilities, including ADHD) please let me know and we can figure out if we might be a good fit.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have tutored students with ADHD for five of the seven years that I have been tutoring. Having taken courses on teaching theory, combined with my experience having ADHD, has helped me create an approach that works for my students (although it is modified for each student, because no two people with ADHD are the same). We use the material they are struggling with and then discuss study skills and strategies to help them with this material and in future courses. My students appreciate that I want to help them find effective ways to study and have easy to follow suggestions (such as using highlighters to connect numbers to formulas) for breaking the material down into smaller and more manageable pieces. Most importantly, they learn that they can study and accomplish their goals with the right approach.

C++

I have been programming for years and feel that C/C++ is an excellent first programming language to learn (it was my first). I have used variants of C/C++ for parts of my dissertation work. The Arduino platform provides an excellent way to learn the language for those that are not currently enrolled in a class.

Calculus

As an engineering graduate student, I have taken calculus 1-3 and many additional calculus based math courses. Calculus was the first class that I started tutoring, and it's still one of my favorite subjects to tutor. I enjoy explaining the concepts and helping students succeed in this class that will open the door to many other educational opportunities.

Chemistry

I have been tutoring chemistry for seven years at academic, honors, and AP levels. My students appreciate my ability to break problems down into manageable steps and help them keep their work organized to minimize careless mistakes.

SAT Math

I scored 760 on the math section of the SAT when I took the test, as well as a perfect score (800) on the math section of the GRE. My students appreciate that we focus on the problems they need to master to achieve their goal score, as well as developing an individualized test taking strategy.
