About Jennifer

Hi! My name is Jennifer and I have been a teacher for about 17 years. The majority of my teaching experience has been as a deaf/hard of hearing teacher. I have worked with students from 3 years old up through high school and enjoy helping them reach their full potential. In addition to hearing loss, many of my students have had additional disabilities such as cerebral palsy, Usher's Syndrome, and learning disabilities. I enjoy teaching language and reading using systematic approaches where lessons build on each other. I enjoy math as well and tutored college algebra while in college.

For the last 2 years I taught English as a second language in an elementary school. I enjoyed watching my students grasp vocabulary and English concepts which helped tremendously in their abilities to read and write English. I enjoy working with people of different cultures, languages and backgrounds in addition to working with American children. I consider myself a lifelong learner as well. I am staying home with our 2 year old daughter this year and would like to continue to teach in some capacity :) If you believe I would be a good fit, I look forward to hearing from you soon!

I hold current teaching certificate in the following areas: Deaf education, English as a second language, & Middle school language arts. Vocabulary is absolutely vital for English to be read and understood and used in writing. Language/grammar has to be systematically taught to students who are learning English and I enjoy helping students succeed in this area. I've tutored reading and been trained in several different reading approaches including Saxon Phonics & Letterland.

The majority of my teaching experience has been with deaf and hard of hearing students. I've worked with manual, oral and Cued Speech students and interpreted as needed. I use Pidgin Sign English which is a combination of ASL and English signs in English word order. It is important to me that signs be conceptually correct. The majority of my experience has had me talking and signing at the same time and when using true ASL, one cannot do so.

I hope that my experience with deaf/hard of hearing & English language learners will not have other parents/students shy away from contacting me. Teaching is an art and not one method applies to all learners. If students are not achieving well in a particular subject, it is often because it is not being taught in a way he/she can fully grasp it. I enjoy challenges and would love an opportunity to work with your child. :)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am a teacher with ESL certification who has taught ESL for the last two years in an elementary setting, although I have 17 years of teaching experience with various ages and various levels. With ESL students or deaf and hard of hearing students, learning the language is imperative in order to develop good reading & writing skills. I enjoy developing creative lessons that are engaging and fun. Although English is a difficult language, enjoying the learning process is imperative in order to have the desire to continue :)

Reading

I've been a teacher for 17 years & have taught various subjects. I've worked with many evidence-based reading programs as well. I'd love to assess where your child currently is and come up with a plan to help him/her increase his/her reading skills.

Sign Language

I have taught deaf and hard of hearing students for about 15 years, both oral and manual (using sign language). I have taught sign language at a community college and interpreted during my job as a teacher when needed in elementary, middle and high school.

Very professional!

Jennifer was very professional and was an interpret for my daughter at the fundraiser so my daughter would know what was going and not feel left out of every conversation. It was wonderful to have her there. Thank you Jennifer!
