About Liz

This coming school year will mark the start of my eleventh year of teaching elementary school students. I graduated magna cum laude (3.73 GPA) with a Bachelor's of Science from Eastern Michigan University in 2003 with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education, along with three minors in Language Arts Group, Arts Group, and Structures of Discipline. I have taught elementary school in Florida, Washington, and North Carolina, including one year of kindergarten, one year of second grade, six years of third grade, and two years of fifth grade. I have also tutored grades 2-5 at least six summers throughout my teaching career. In addition to this, I have teaching endorsements in elementary education and ESL/ELL.

My English qualifications are first and foremost proven by my minoring in Language Arts during my undergraduate program at Eastern Michigan University, and furthermore, while I was in college, I used to tutor college students in editing and essay writing. Also, I am a writer on the side and I am in the process of writing two novels, and I write poetry, prose, etc. I have always loved editing, and thinking of ways to change the words of a text around to make it more effective and impressive. I carry this love of words over to my students. I teach sentence structure, vocabulary, punctuation, etc in a way that motivates students to want to learn and love to write.

The reasons why I am an effective educator stem from the fact that I have a fantastic track record of taking students who have not yet mastered previous grade level material when they enter my classroom, building on their prior foundations, and guiding them to reach and master grade level skills in the current grade. Also, I use a variety of learning strategies in order to achieve this, as well as any other learning tools at my disposal. Moreover, I have very high standards for my students, and I expect my students to work to the best of their ability. Furthermore, I make strong connections with my students by letting them know I care about them and their learning goals. Students are always welcome to ask questions if they don't understand.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
