About Kenneth

I have two decades of experience teaching and tutoring, primarily college and high school students, but also many K-8 students. Holder of a PhD in history from UC-San Diego, I was a professor at Duke University, Oregon State, and, locally, Kennesaw State before setting off on my own. I also taught and tutored for two years at an alternative high school in Seattle. I specialize in the humanities, social sciences/studies, writing, Spanish, and test prep, but I have also taught math and science in the classroom and in tutoring sessions. I am a mature person who has worked for the media as well as universities, and I have traveled the world, much of it on a bicycle.

My approach is to treat students as whole persons with unique interests, strengths, and concerns. All of my work is tailored to the student so that rapport is established and the student is able to begin to make sense of the material on his/her own terms. While I do this naturally, I have also received training in the pedagogy and psychology of working with students with learning disabilities and unusual learning styles. While I especially enjoy making a difference for students who for these or other reasons have trouble fitting in and engaging, I enjoy working with any student who is eager to learn and grow.

Although I am a sophisticated, experienced educator, my unassuming personality and outstanding listening ability—not to mention my knowledge of pop culture—enable me to relate well with students and parents of all ages and backgrounds. I get along well with most students, whether they are mainstream, alternative, minority, straight-A, straight-C, special needs, or other type of individual.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I have a PhD in history and have taught American and World history at Duke, Oregon State, and other universities. I also taught high school for two years. In addition, I was a journalist for seven years. Finally, I have done extensive coursework in the social sciences.
