I have taught Kindergarten through third grade for twenty-one years in private and public settings. I currently teach Pre-K in a private setting. I have also worked as a part-time nanny with school-age children. I have tutored students and assisted my three children after school. I am very comfortable working with Elementary and Middle School children in Math, Reading, and Beginning French. I am currently completing classes to renew my teaching certificate in NC, and just completed a class which focused on Common Core Curriculum for Reading and Language Arts for K-5.
Tutoring provides a very personal setting for me to get to know the student, and to find out how they learn. Knowing how a student learns is the first step in helping them make progress. As a parent, I realize that it often helps to have another adult who is concerned for the child's learning and well-being to step in when then child needs extra help. Sometimes a student can thrive with a bit more motivation and encouragement which is not always available in the classroom setting. I am invested in children and want all children to have the best opportunity possible to succeed. I look forward to tutoring, and I view this time with students as a chance to make a difference in their academic success!
I enjoyed planning hands-on Math lessons when I taught in the classroom setting. I always wanted to find another way to explain the problem to students. I also worked on Math Education research when I completed my Master's Degree in Education. I had a particular interest in how children solved problems, and I was involved with testing students.
I believe teachers must have excellent grammar, therefore I want to pass this on to students!! Speaking and language are related to writing, so I hope to help students work on these areas together.
I have recently spent a semester studying Common Core for Reading and Language Arts for grades K-5. I have explored many resources for students, and believe I can adhere to the purposes of Common Core ideas.
I have taught Elementary Education for twenty-one years. Not only do I understand the material which is being taught, but I also recognize the needs of students in this age group. I have spent time most of my teaching years with young students, and I believe that one of my strengths is the ability to get along with children in the early grades.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have completed a recent online class in Common Core Standards for Reading and Language Arts. I have read supplemental materials, and have used many of the on-line resources for literacy. I believe that I understand the goals of Common Core in the classroom and outside of the classroom. I feel equipped to help students and to find answers as needed. I realize that the goals of Common Core Language Arts are to help all students gain college and career readiness.
I have studied Elementary Education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I have taught in grades Pre-K, Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third grades. I have also tutored elementary and middle school aged students. I am currently in the process of renewal of my teaching certificate in North Carolina.
