About Kevin

Have you ever thought that you are not good at foreign languages? Do you want to learn a language but need help? Learning a second language can be difficult, but you can do it. I can relate; most of my adult life has consisted of traveling, learning languages, and teaching languages. My experience and tutoring style can help students understand and feel good about communicating in another language.

Personal and professional opportunities have provided me with many enriching teaching and learning experiences. During my undergraduate years, I studied Spanish abroad at Pontifica University in Bogota, Colombia, and the University of Guadalajara in Mexico. Additionally, I began tutoring and teaching English to elementary students. Subsequently, I spent extended periods of time in Ecuador and Mexico. Eventually, I moved to South Korea where I studied Korean while gaining four years of ESL/EFL experience with students of all ages (2006-2010). Earning my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction enhanced my knowledge of pedagogy and the learning process. Since 2011, I have been refining my foreign language teaching skills at a private middle school in Durham, North Carolina. Additionally, I am a licensed educator in the states of North Carolina and Minnesota, I regularly receive professional development, and I am a member of our School Improvement Plan Committee.

I strive to have a professional yet personable approach that caters to student needs and learning styles. As a professional, I value my students' time and goals. I aim to be punctual and efficient, and I structure my lessons accordingly. Furthermore, I use best practice teaching activities, resources, and technology to enhance my instruction. Also, I realize that tutoring requires a personable approach. Therefore, a student should feel comfortable enough to speak the language with me. To break the ice, I often encourage my students to communicate while doing an activity together. The activities are based on the student's interests and learning style not mine. When students make mistakes, it is an opportunity to learn. However, when students feel embarrassed, they are less likely to communicate. Therefore, I always try to correct my students without making them feel embarrassed. Besides feeling at ease, my tutoring approach assists students to be consistent with studying and engaging with the language. I'm happy to provide my students with ideas and methods of vocabulary acquisition and independent practice. By doing so, my students can continue to learn on their own time. Despite the common belief, studying a language does not mean writing vocabulary words until one's hands ache. Although, rote memorization can be an effective method to improve the breadth of vocabulary for many students. I believe that reading level-appropriate current event articles, listening to songs and playing games in the target language can also reinforce one's understanding of grammar and vocabulary.

Learning languages and teaching has given me the opportunity to meet people and experience cultures from all over the world. I hope that it will do the same for you. Learning languages should be fun and rewarding; let me help you achieve your goals.

Very kind and patient

Kevin has started to help my preschooler to read and speak more confidently in Spanish. He knew exactly how to approach teaching my very young child. He also has flexible hours.
