About Chris

My love of helping students is born out of my love of education as a whole--in my undergraduate studies, I always said I'd love to have a degree in everything. During my undergraduate years, I gained experience as both a teaching assistant and a tutor, serving as a varying mix of both for 3 years. As a teaching assistant, I spent 2.5 hours each week teaching 50 student problem sessions for general biochemistry and 3 hours working with small groups of students in basic and advanced organic chemistry. In 2015, I graduated a valedictorian at NC State with degrees in Biology and Psychology. Currently, I work as a researcher at Duke University.

My aspiration to be a professor and researcher informed my growth as a student and naturally led me to tutoring. After taking a semester of tutoring training, I spent 2 semesters doing individual weekly tutoring in Calculus and Chemistry. For the remainder of my undergraduate years, I continued on as an independent tutor in biochemistry, biology, and chemistry.

As a tutor, I utilize a unique philosophy that incorporates my training in psychology to make learning more efficient. I treat each of my tutees struggling to find a way to access and understand the material. As such, tutoring should be about understanding how a student learns and finding ways to fit the learning style to the material itself. Everyone has the capacity to learn, but most students struggle to find a solid grasp in the fundamentals and get lost as the material stacks up on top of them. Finding the right approach for each student can give them a framework with which to better learn material in the future.

I love tutoring and teaching because I find the material exciting. As a researcher, my job is to actively use and manipulate the concepts that utilize aspects of everything that I teach. I don't teach any subjects that I don't love.

I have several years of experience tutoring in biology, biochemistry, and chemistry and have degrees in biology (human biology/biochemistry focused) and psychology.

Additionally, I have been instructed in the psychology of education and have taken a semester tutoring course.

I am generally available for tutoring after 6pm on weekdays and anytime on the weekends.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Organic Chemistry

I have tutored in organic chemistry for 2 years as well as serving as a teaching assistant for general and advanced organic chemistry. In college, chemistry (including organic) was my top subject, and I received an A in all of my chemistry courses in high school. Additionally, I currently work in a scientific research field that regularly employs principles of organic chemistry.
