In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
From 2004 to 2007 I taught reading at a middle School while getting my masters degree in teaching English as a second language. From 2007 to 2009 I taught ESL at a high school where I co-taught and tutored students in their English classes as well as in ESL. During that time I also tutored several middle school students in reading and writing. Since 2010 I've been teaching at a community college, where I teach Reading, Composition, Grammar, and Listening & Speaking.
Whether working with adults or adolescents, I focus on improving metacognative skills such as previewing, predicting, and using context clues. When helping students improve their reading skills I don't try to hide my own enjoyment of reading. I bring books that are interesting to both the students and myself. The best part of teaching reading for me is seeing students evolve from reluctant, struggling readers to enthusiastic readers who can get lost in the pages of a book.
