NC State (MSL)
I have been a middle school teacher for three years. What I enjoy most is seeing my students become so interested in a project or assignment that they start to take control of their own learning. I have worked extensively with technology, guiding my students through website design and other, more essential computer literacy skills. My understanding of how to integrate technology started with my education at NC State, where I received my MSL degree and The Outstanding Senior Award in 2012 for that program.
Just recently I have completed a two-day course through my school district to further my ability to use technology more efficiently in my lessons. That's the cool thing about it; there is always more to learn! From making and editing videos to becoming proficient in the latest web 2.0 tools, it makes learning more fun and keeps it relevant to the types of skills and abilities students need to develop in order to compete at a high level in today's society.

I have been teaching reading as part of the middle school curriculum for language arts and social studies for the past three years. Reading is such an essential skill, and yet so many young people are reluctant to pick up a book. I have worked closely with the literacy specialist at my school and have been lucky to have had access to the resources and methods she has been using through acquiring her doctorate.
In addition to working 1-on-1 with students in the areas of greatest need, I also work to increase the fluency of my students through helping them find reading materials that match their own areas of interest and ability levels.
Writing, I feel, is a skill that gives students growth in many different areas. I have my students answer an open-ended question in writing at the beginning of every lesson. This is a chance for students to practice expressing their own views and to work through and examine their stance on issues using the writing as a tool.
Writing is also a very essential skill for success in education and the professional sphere. For this reason, I believe students should practice writing that adheres to the standards for professional written language.
