Hello, my name is Tonya and I am a Family and Consumer Science teacher with Wake County Public Schools. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Clothing and Textiles and a Master's Degree in Teacher Leadership. I have been in the teaching profession for 19 years. I love to teach, tutor and write. In 1998 I started my own tutoring business and I have tutored students all over the Triangle. I really love tutoring students on the elementary level because these are the most critical years of their lives. These are the years where these students need to learn the basics, which they will need for the rest of their lives. I really love teaching students how to read, how to take test and how to study. These are very important to me because I have seen so many students graduate from high school who could not read and could not make good grades on tests because they were never taught study skills and test-taking skills.
I am also married and I have two children ages 13 and 18. My two children were my first tutoring projects. When both of them started school I was very disappointed because I thought the teachers were going to teach them everything they needed to know and they did not. So, I always remembered what one of my college professors said in my child development class, "The parents are always the first teachers." And from that experience with my two children I decided to teach them how to read, write, do math and how to study, prepare and take test. Again I really enjoy teaching, tutoring and writing. One of my biggest goals in life is to teach as many students that I can how to study, prepare and take test!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I feel that I am qualified to teach study skills because when I first started teaching I noticed that many of my students did not know how to study. So I developed a study skills/test-taking packet and I used it to teach them these skills. I also starting doing workshops in this area to help students in the Triangle. I also worked with many mentor programs that need these skills for their students.
