About Shannon

Hello! I am a medical student who loves helping students learn about science and math and also helping students prepare for important standardized tests. I earned my B.S. in Biology Summa Cum Laude and with University Honors from the University of Alabama and am currently working on my M.D. at the University of North Carolina.

As someone not far removed from high school and college myself, I am uniquely able to connect with my students and meet them where they are to propel them toward success. I realize that math and science can be tricky for many students, but I strive to break concepts down into their manageable parts that give my students a firm foundation for their current course and any future courses to follow. I also have extensive experience with standardized testing and can teach both concepts and test-taking strategy for the ACT, SAT, and MCAT.

I have several years of successful tutoring experience under my belt and I always create a positive learning environment for all of my students, leading to results in any subject. I look forward to working with you and your student!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have several years of experience tutoring ACT Math. I can help your student improve their math skills, master ACT strategy, and improve their test-taking speed in a matter of weeks. I have personally scored above the 95th percentile in ACT Math and have completed math courses through the calculus sequence in college. Most importantly though, I can create a positive environment for your student to learn and improve their confidence and skills so they are ready to master the ACT Math section on test day!

ACT Reading

If ACT Reading is giving you headaches, I have a solution! I have worked with many ACT Reading students over the years and have developed strategies for success that you won't find in test prep books. Whether your student is a "slow reader" or just has trouble finding the main idea, I can create a positive learning environment and give your student the tools they need for success on the ACT Reading section.

Algebra 1

I have personally completed math courses through the college calculus sequence and earned A's in each course. I have also tutored algebra 1 in the past with significant student improvement, evidenced by course grade and a more positive outlook towards math. I can break down even the trickiest of word problems and equations into real-life examples that are on any student's level, meeting them where they are and helping them to improve their skills.

Anthropology

As an undergraduate, I took several classes in the anthropology department and received A+'s in each of them. I was also an undergraduate research assistant in the anthropology department, working on several cultural and medical anthropology projects. I have particular expertise in cultural anthropology as opposed to archaeologic or biologic anthropology.

Biology

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a 4.0 GPA and University Honors from the University of Alabama in 2014 and I am currently a medical student. All of that adds up to my being a very knowledgeable biology tutor who uses her knowledge daily to stay sharp in the subject. I am rather passionate about biology and I can help any student to understand the concepts and appreciate the science.

MCAT

As a current medical student, I am highly qualified to teach the MCAT. I personally scored a 36R on the exam in 2012 with a breakdown of 12 biological sciences,12 physical sciences, and 12 verbal reasoning. I have taken and excelled in all of the college courses meant to prepare students for the MCAT, including general biology, chemistry, genetics, and physics. I also understand the format of the various sections well and have winning strategies for MCAT test taking.

Microbiology

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a 4.0 GPA and University Honors from the University of Alabama in 2014 and I am currently a medical student. I took microbiology in college and also use and expand upon my knowledge of the subject frequently in medical school, so I have a very thorough understanding of it. I also really enjoy microbiology and am confident that I can teach the concepts to any student and add interesting details that make the subject fun.

Prealgebra

I have personally completed math courses through the college calculus sequence and earned A's in each course. I have also tutored pre algebra in the past with significant student improvement, evidenced by course grade and a more positive outlook towards math. I can break down even the trickiest of word problems and equations into real-life examples that are on any student's level, meeting them where they are and helping them to improve their skills.

SAT Math

I have personally scored above the 90th percentile on the SAT and completed math courses through the college calculus sequence, earning A's in each course. I have also tutored high school math in the past with emphasis on test prep and have seen significant student improvement. Much of the preparation for SAT math is strategy, and I am well prepared to teach those strategies along with the necessary math skills to score highly.
