About Maurice

Ahlan wa sahlan! Arabic has been a personal interest and professional endeavor of mine for fourteen years now. Contrary to popular belief it is not a difficult language to learn, as it follows a straightforward logic. I often tell my students: "It's an easy language to speak, but a difficult language to master." I am a non-native speaker of Arabic who learned the language in adulthood. I started off taking classes as an undergraduate student and studying a semester in Morocco. I tutored a number of people after graduating and eventually found the opportunity to attain my master's degree in teaching Arabic to non-native speakers in Khartoum, Sudan, where I lived for three years.

Since receiving my masters in 2011, I have instructed Arabic at a number of colleges and universities: Durham Technical Community College, Elon University, Zaytuna College, and Bennett College. I am known for having an innovative teaching style that is fun, student-centered, and clear. I bring into my classes the various dimensions of the language and other interesting facts, as well as my personal learning experiences. I am often described as patient, enthusiastic, a bit rigorous, but always with a smile.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I possess fourteen years of experience learning the Arabic language including a master's in teaching Arabic to non-native speakers, which I acquired in Khartoum, Sudan. In addition, I have taught university-level Arabic at institutions such as Duke, Durham Tech, Elon, Bennett, and Zaytuna. I describe my teaching style as interactive and activities-based. I incorporate a number of recent principles in effective educational practices such as the student-centered classroom, backward design, and project-based learning, in addition to some traditional Arabic methods such as the use of morphology and memorization of selected literature to enhance speaking and word recognition skills.
