About Brian

I am taking my final summer class before I get my Master of Arts in Teaching from NCSU. I've taught English in South Korea, done a teaching internship at Shepard Magnet Middle School, and done homework tutoring at the Boys and Girls Club.
My approach to teaching and learning is based in the research for best teaching practices: among other things, connecting the lesson to student interests, engaging prior knowledge, and encouraging students to think of themselves as writers. This empowers students to feel qualified to think of school reading (and writing!) assignments from a writer's perspective, and gain a writer's insight, rather than feeling like a passive audience at whom a teacher dictates meanings and significances.
This approach allows a student to bring his or her own perspective and experiences to a piece of writing, so it comes down from the pedestal and into the hands of the students.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
