About Andrew

Education is my passion. I love working with kids and being a part of making a positive difference in my community. Dating back to high school, I have 9 years of volunteer tutoring experience at YMCAs and a wide variety of schools. I worked at a child care center with kids ages 3-12 for 3 years and have taught HS math since graduating from UNC with a BA in Education in 2009. I've also coached HS Basketball for the past 3 years. I'm an extremely driven and hard-working person with a zest for life.

When a student asks me, "How do I do this problem?" I respond with the same question. I believe that my role as a tutor is to teach the student how to access prior knowledge and guide them towards discovering the solution on their own. I strive to make learning powerful, engaging, challenging and relevant. My goals as a tutor are to do the following:
1. Build a relationship with them as a positive role model
2. Show them I care about them outside of their schoolwork
3. Design problems/activities/questions that develop their own critical thinking skills and intrinsic motivation
4. Facilitate their own self-discovery
5. Build confidence in their own abilities

I also have a recording contract as a Hip Hop artist and have released two professionally mastered and packaged albums. I've taught spoken word workshops and have found that (even in math classes) poetry/written expression can significantly inspire a student towards success.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I taught Algebra I for two years and my EOC proficiency scores were 40% higher than my school's average. Algebra has been my favorite subject to teach simply because 8th/9th grade is a pivotal age in a child's life. I believe that success in higher levels of mathematics is contingent upon a strong understanding of pre-algebra and algebra I concepts.
