About Kate

Hi Parents!

My name is Kate and I am a certified special education teacher. I will also have a master's degree in education. My years of tutoring experience have taught me that learning can be fun. I believe children learn best through use of manipulatives and hands-on games and activities as well as creating motivating experiences so children actually want to learn! My work in the field of special education has taught me how to break down skills and teach them piece by piece. I think this method works well with children with and without special needs.

Professionally, I have worked as a therapist in the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) with children with autism. My clients ranged from ages 2-14. I have been doing ABA for nearly 10 years and I find it incredibly rewarding. The research behind ABA is composed of a simple three-term contingency; teacher tells the student to do something, student does it, student is reinforced. The key is establishing what is reinforcing to the child. I know that my experience in this empirically supported field will help your child become successful.

Please thoughtfully consider me as a tutor for your child. Thank you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I hold a special education teacher degree through the state of Illinois which certifies me working with children from K-12 with a variety of disorders including but not limited to ADD, Autism, Behavior Disorders, Emotional Disorders, and Learning disabilities. I recently just finished my masters degree in Special Education with certificates in Applied Behavior Analysis and Autism.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have been working with children with autism for the past 8 years- more specifically in the field of applied behavior analysis. I hold both an undergraduate degree(from Illinois State) and masters degree (from Ball State) in special education.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have both an undergraduate degree as well as a masters degree in special education. I have been tutoring young children for more than 8 years. Although I'm certified in the state of Illinois, my degree allows me to teach students from K-12. My experience in special education gives me a wide range of skills needed to to tutor elementary aged students.

Phonics

Using phonics, I have worked with young children on their pre-literacy and literacy skills. I have a special education teaching degree as well as a masters in education. My degrees certify me to work with children between the ages of kindergarten and 12th grade.
