About Dominique

Hello. My name is Dominique and I have a CA & NC teaching credential and master's degree in education. I enjoy working with students of all ages in different subjects. I have experience in Math, Reading Comprehension and Writing in K-12. I also enjoy helping with GED and test preparation.

I am very patient and take the time to explain concepts many different ways until the student fully understands. I explain through examples and break problems down into easy steps. I enjoy hearing students explain the steps they will take to solve the problems and listening to students defend their answers. My goal is to see every student complete assignments independently, accurately, and confidently. I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve your best!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a degree in psychology and I also work with students who have ADHD. Students with ADHD struggle with focusing and completing assignments. Depending on the severity, setting up incentives such as rewards in stickers or prizes before beginning the activity can be helpful. Having the student repeat the directions and the time they are allotted helps them to stay focused. Using a timer and encouraging them to keep working is another strategy I use. If there is a lengthy assignment that takes an hour, I would split it up into 15 minutes interval and have the student take a break in between. Sometimes students with ADHD need to complete assignments standing up, and I will modify the lesson if they need to stand while completing it. I will also bring in visuals for those students who are visual and kinesthetic learners.

Autism

I have a degree in psychology and I currently work with students who have learning disabilities and autism. When working with students who have autism I make sure that I explain directions and concepts slowly and in many different ways. Students with autism often have difficulty with expression, so I also give them the opportunity to answer questions in different ways (i.e. through illustrations, hand-gestures.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to tutor elementary students because I have a Masters Degree and Teaching Credential in Elementary Education. I have 10 years of experience tutoring and teaching children of all ages.

Social Studies

I would like to be approved to teach social studies. I enjoy teaching social studies because of how many current events share a connection with past historical events. When I teach students about important events in history I teach the students to understand key figures like characters in a movie. These key figures have a point of view that often involves action, adventure and a story worth learning about. I am qualified to teach social studies because I previously taught social studies to fourth graders at Baldwin Hills ES and I currently work with students who are taking the social studies portion of the GED test which includes American History, US History, World History and Government and Economics.

Special Needs

I currently work with middle school students with special needs. The students I work with have been diagnosed with specific learning disabilities, autism, and Aspergers. It is important to create a structured learning environment for this students that is consistent and routine. It is also important to be patient with them in explaining things and listen when they are explaining in order to correct misconceptions they may have.

Study Skills

I would like gain approval for tutoring in the area of study skills. I understand the importance of setting goals and having a plan prior to studying. When working with students I will teach them time management skills, concentration skills, and note-taking skills. Once students learn proper study skills they will begin to study smarter, not harder. I am qualified to teach study skills because I have a master's in education and I have previously taught study skills at Gertz-Ressler High School in Los Angeles.
