Hello All! I have a great deal of experience in tutoring and teaching students ranging from elementary to young adult. I have worked with students in improving their reading fluency, comprehension, study skills and test preparation in content area subjects. My degree in ESL and teaching experience has given me opportunities to teach English skills to students at many levels. I am a certified Orton-Gillingham tutor and have reading training from the Hill Center in Durham. I have attended training workshops on "Guided Reading " given by Irene Fountas and use her methods. I am also a member of the North Carolina Reading Association where I attend meetings and teacher training workshops. I am familiar with the North Carolina Common Core State Standards.
I prefer to work with students on a one-to-one basis, but I have also taught in classroom settings for children, adult education, and college students, as an adjunct faculty member, for more than 20 years. When working with children, I use a multi-sensory approach focusing on the interests and needs of the students with materials that relate to their developmental levels. I like to incorporate the use of hands-on materials and games that reinforce the concepts they are learning. I develop an individual plan of study for each student based on informal assessments, my observations and the needs that are expressed by the child’s parents and teachers. My lessons are created to be success oriented and encourage student participation in all activities.
I would love to meet or speak with you to discuss my qualifications further!

Lauren was wonderful at not only working with my child on her reading, but took time to get to know her interests to make her feel comfortable. Her assessment information was outstanding and we are looking forward to more lessons.
Lauren came ready to work with my child. She had a plan to help with vocabulary and prepare for the SAT
Ms. Lauren helped my daughter for reading. She is very professional for teaching reading with her own style and very patient as well. We love to work with her.
Lauren is doing great with teaching my daughter to read. My daughter enjoys the questions she asks to test her comprehension. My daughter also likes the books and activities Lauren brought to the lesson.
She was very good with my two young boys. She was very patient and truly invested in their learning. Great find.
Lauren has been my daughter's tutor for almost two years. She is a patient and kind person who truly cares about my daughter. She has shown great improvement in her self confidence and language arts skills since Lauren began tutoring her. She also enjoys working with Lauren.
Lauren is great with my son who has ADHD. I have definitely seen improvements in his school work and self esteem since he has been working with her. Lauren has a unique way of getting my son to show his creativity and she sucessfully inspires him to express himself through story telling and writing.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with various students to help them prepare for the ACT/Reading and Language test sections. I have many different strategies to offer but I do want want my students to choose a method that works best for him or her. If the student or parent feels a need for more help in reading comprehension skills, I can conduct an informal reading assessment not only to assist in raising the student's reading level but to make the best use of our time. I have a Master of Education degree as well as experience teaching and tutoring language and test taking skills to: elementary, high school, and college students.
I have many years of experience teaching and tutoring elementary school age children. Every child has a different learning style. Some children have more difficulty focusing on their schoolwork and sitting still for extended periods of time than others. I help them use their energy in a positive way by engaging them in hands-on activities, break up their lesson into smaller parts and provide ways for them to have more movement as part of the subject they are learning. As with any child, I focus on the positive and praise their efforts.
I have a Master of Education degree in Special Education and have worked in two different schools that specialize in teaching children with dyslexia: Landmark School in Manchester-By-the Sea, Mass., and the Carroll School in Lincoln, Mass. I have extensive training and experience in teaching school age children with the diagnosis of dyslexia. I am trained and certified in Orton-Gillingham, a reading, writing and spelling program that has been very successfully used with children and adults who have dyslexia or similar reading problems. It is a structured, step-by-step approach that helps students learn one reading and spelling pattern at a time. New concepts are not introduced until the student has mastered the material he/she has been given first.
I have a BA in Elementary Education and obtained a license to teach these grades when I moved to North Carolina based on courses from my college transcripts, scores on tests required by the state of NC and my experience. I have taught in elementary school classrooms and also provided support in small group instruction to children at these grade levels. I have a strong understanding of child development in elementary school but more importantly, I respect and nurture each child's individual gifts. That is one of the joys of one-to-one tutoring! I have taught reading, math, social studies, science and history and also developed units that combined art and music for each subject. I hope to hear from parents who want a high quality of instruction for their child but also someone who makes learning fun!
I have a Master's degree in English, specializing in ESL (focused on English Language Literacy) from the University of Massachusetts in Boston, MA. I think that my education and experience in teaching reading and writing has more breadth and depth than many other English teachers. The strategies that motivate ESL students are often refreshing and fun for middle and high school English students who are struggling. For example, I sometimes use the music and song lyrics from the Beatles' tune "Yesterday" to practice past tense verbs. I make learning fun! I also maintain high expectations in a gentle way. I have been an English instructor/teacher to people with a wide range of ability levels spanning from intermediate second language learners to gifted native English speakers. I help my students use descriptive language, proper grammar and teach them how to transition from being a beginning writer to a more experienced writer and what the difference is. I instruct students in understanding and describing the main ideas, plot, theme and many other aspects of their reading material, literature and genres. I have helped people write speeches and presentations. As a tutor, I consider myself a partner with the person I am working with. I believe that all my students have good ideas and I aid in the transformation process of putting these thoughts into a coherent piece of writing or oral expression that they are happy with. I am looking forward to hearing from anyone who needs assistance with English.
I have a Master's degree in ESL from the University of Massachusetts in Boston and have taught English as a Second Language to both children and adults from almost every culture and language background. I have taught adults in a variety of settings and programs such as family literacy, job training, workplace, community college and universities. I have also taught public speaking to adults who have worked in the high tech field and wanted to improve their English skills. I teach reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Most recently, I have taught advanced writing skills to adults at Durham Technical Community College.
Hi! I use a PHONICS BASED approach when I am helping a student improve their his or her reading fluency. I believe in helping students build a good foundation of PHONICS SKILLS. If I am working with a first or second grader, I may start with the AT family and have the student change the beginning and final consonants to make new words. Once the child has mastered these, I will move on to other short vowels and consonant blends. These skills can also be expanded into reading two and three syllable words such as: mas-cot, den-tist, At-lan-tic, Wis-con-sin, fan-tas-tic, and other words This is not only important in the early grades but in middle school as well. The student may be having difficulty sounding out longer words such as: CONTINENT or CONGRESSIONAL as he or she tries to comprehend longer readings in textbooks. My Master of Education degree in Special Education with a strong focus on Reading and Language Difficulties makes me an excellent candidate to improve your child's reading fluency.
I have been both a speaker and member of Toastmasters' Public Speaking Club where I have served in a variety of roles. I also have a Master's degree in ESOL and have helped many adult students improve their speaking skills including correct grammar, pronunciation and their choices of vocabulary. This is where I can be most helpful in public speaking. I develop lessons and practice exercises for the student based on the specific material they wish to present. I have worked with ESOL adults who are on the intermediate to advanced level and need further help. I have taught people from almost every country and culture in colleges and universities as well as different work place settings especially in the high tech fields. I have 10+ years of teaching experience.
I have a BA in Elementary Education (K-6)an MA in Special Education and a second Master's degree in English with a specialization in ESL. When I started teaching elementary education, I used my reading and language arts skills. When I was studying for my first master's degree at Lesley University in Cambridge Mass, I took enough reading courses to enable me to become licensed as a reading specialist. I taught reading and language arts at a private school for students who had major problems in their ability to sound out words. I received a lot of training there, in both decoding and reading comprehension. When I left this school, I started a private practice as a specialized tutor. I had this practice for sixteen years.I was hired by public and private schools and parents. I gained a lot of experience in teaching/tutoring reading to children who had word attack problems as well as older students who had trouble reading in content areas and students of all different ages and reading difficulties. I also taught in a community college setting where the students needed to be prepared for their majors such as; nursing, social work and business.
When I got my second master's degree in English (ESL) I learned how to teach reading to bilingual children and adults who were non-native English speakers. I have helped adults with the kind of reading that is involved in taking tests such as the GRE and the SAT tests. When teaching elementary students, I use a phonics based approach with rich literature and vocabulary. I put the focus on where it is needed most and each child is different.I build on their strengths and interests With adults who are new to this country I use subjects that are part of their life experience. When helping someone prepare for a test(SAT) I help them learn everything that is necessary to do score well on the tests. I feel qualified to teach reading to almost anyone for any purpose after 20+ years of experience.
Hi! I have experience tutoring students in the Reading and Language areas of the SAT test. I sometimes conduct a reading assessment to determine the students' areas of strengths and needs to make the best use of our time in preparing for the reading part of the test. I also have additional resources and texts if the student needs help in preparing for college reading or to raise their level of reading before they take the test. I help the student find a study method that works best for him or her. I also have a Master of Education degree.
Hi! First of all, I believe that a child with "Special Needs" is often in an educational setting that is a mismatch for his/her skills and learning style. Not every child can be successful in a classroom with 25 other children where they are not able to get the kind of methods, practice and reinforcement of the skills they are asked to master. Some children learn better in a one-to-one and small group settings. Some children are better visual learners and others learn better in an auditory or tactile manner. When I teach or tutor, I find out how a child learns best and use strategies and materials to help them use their full potential. Some children may have learning disabilities, developmental delays, autism, dyslexia and other learning difficulties which requires someone with experience and training in those areas. I have a Master of Education degree in Special Education and over twenty years of experience teaching children and adults with different learning styles and learning disabilities. I focus on elementary reading and math. I help middle school students who are having trouble with reading and writing skills in content areas. There are many different types of reading and writing skills required by the time a student reaches middle school. I also help Second Language Learners who have "Special Needs". Many learning disabled students are often gifted in some areas and I help them use their strengths to overcome difficulties. Every child is special and no lesson is exactly the same. That is why I enjoy tutoring! I can develop an individual plan of study for each child. So please contact me if you want a tutor who will truly care about your child.
I am working with a third grade student on study skills. I have helped students up to the ninth grade and also college students. I often help children and adults who need help in organizing their school materials. I want them to learn to master some skills they can continue to develop as they progress in school such as how to plan for long term projects and use their time well when studying for tests and exams. I have also helped many children, especially in middle school, to improve their reading skills in content area books and write longer papers. My goal is to have my students become independent and confident in their abilities.
I have a Master's degree in English, specializing in ESL, from the University of Massachusetts in Boston, MA. I am just as qualified to teach English as any other English major, in fact, I think my experience in teaching reading and writing has more breadth and depth than many other English teachers.
I have taught English reading and writing to students from elementary school to the college level. I have also taught writing from the sentence level to multi-paragaph compositions. I help my students use descriptive language, proper grammar and how to transition from being a beginning writer to a a more experienced writer and what the difference is. I instruct students in describing the main ideas, plot, theme and many other aspects of their reading material. I have helped people write speeches and presentations. As a tutor, I consider myself a partner with the person I am workng with. They have good ideas and I aid in the transformation process of putting these thoughts into a coherent piece of writing that they are happy with. I am looking forward to hearing from anyone who needs assistance with their writing skills.
