About Jane

How I foster student success: Build upon strengths. Identify talents and respond to needs. Individualize instruction. Model flexibility & creativity. Empower students with tools and strategies to confidently achieve their goals.

Hi, I'm Jane.

I'm thrilled that you've found me! I look forward to meeting you and working alongside you as you achieve your goals.

I believe that education is more than what happens in the classroom. And, that is why I love teaching outside of the parameters of a public education system which so often stifles the professional educator. Sharing and learning from students, parents, and colleagues - since 1998 - has allowed me to craft methods and refine strategies for learners of all kinds and of all ages.

In my work as an educational liaison, I strive to foster creativity and a positive learning environment to offer instruction that appeals to the brain's natural learning systems. I hold a Professional NC Educator's License - Exceptional Children - K-12 General Curriculum. I have taught in a variety of public school settings for 16 years (1999-2015) and worked in the private sector as an educational advocate, tutor, and professional liaison between school and home; early in my career, I co-founded a charter school for students in grades 9-12 and worked as both a teacher and administrator there for over a decade. The common theme in all of my work has been to help students and their families.

*As a math specialist, my number one goal is to help students understand concepts, apply strategies, and gain confidence in mathematics. Whether your student is a first grader struggling with number sense, a second grader who has difficulty recalling basic facts (adding, subtracting), a third grader lost in the sea of fractions and word problems -- I can help identify the issue and work with the student to make math a more manageable (and less scary!) task that can actually be fun!

*As a reading specialist, I utilize a variety of methods based upon the Orton-Gillingham multisensory methodology including the Wilson Reading System, Corrective Reading, and years of experience. (As a certified Level I Wilson Language System instructor, I utilize top-notch, research based methods for teaching struggling readers and ESL students essential decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills.)

*As a homework specialist, I use a wide range of research-based reading strategies from the University of Kansas' Center for Research on Learning. These strategies allow me to assist students with comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, making inferences, organizing content area material, and meta-cognitive strategies.

My educational background includes a bachelor's degree from Miami University of Ohio; a master's degree in Special Education from North Carolina State University; and a post-graduate Educational Specialist degree in Instructional Leadership & the Neurobiological Influences on Learning from Nova Southeastern University.

Above all, I want students to enjoy learning. I am like an instructional unicorn who becomes an extension of your family for a short time -- my goal as a "tutor" is to help students gain the confidence and set of skills to perform academic tasks INDEPENDENTLY! Through creativity and consistency with me, students will learn academic independence. Ultimately, when students can organize their time, attention, and creativity to achieve their academic goals, my job is finished! What are you waiting for? Let's get started today. Please call, text, or email me to learn more and schedule our first lesson!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught and tutored students in Math 1. For over ten years, I evaluated the efficacy of math instruction among a talented group of teachers -- as the assistant principal of a public high school.

I left public education in 2015, and I have since started my own private practice in educational tutoring, test prep, assessment, and advocacy. I hold a Professional NC Educator's License - Exceptional Children - K-12 General Curriculum.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified K-12 Special Education. For the last year, I have exclusively tutored students ages 5-13 in all subject areas.

I have Wilson Level I certification (reading decoding based on Orton-Gillingham), utilize University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning strategies, and share a love of math and science to increase a conceptual understanding (not simply rote memorization) among my students.

English

I have taught and tutored students in all levels and facets of English (K-12). For over ten years, I evaluated the efficacy of English instruction among a talented group of teachers -- as the assistant principal of a public high school.
