Bio

I am a PhD student at NCSU studying Nuclear Engineering, with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. I am married without kids, with 2 chihuahua mix dogs, and practice horticulture in my spare time. While doing my undergrad degree I frequently tutored underclassmen and peers as a teachers assistant, supplemental calculus instructor, and through leading study groups.

I got great satisfaction out of helping students understand whatever material was in question. In tutoring success isn't measured by how well I do, but how well the student does. Watching a concept click with a student who was having trouble understanding is a great way to end a day.

I have always loved math as it uses a very consistent set of rules that never waver. When entering college I taught myself pre-calculus algebra 1 and 2 in 3 weeks using YouTube to test out of the classes so that I could enter college taking Calculus 1 instead of being a year behind in my degree path. I think there are many ways to teach math and various perspectives that can be useful and that math is easy as long as the teacher is able to match the perspectives with the student, this is something that is relatively impossible in classroom instruction.

After starting my B.S. degree in a community college earning a respectable GPA to transfer to a 4 year university I was able to transfer to NC A&T and complete 4 years worth of mechanical engineering courses in just 3 years which included 2 summers. I graduated from A&T with a 3.94 GPA, first in my mechanical engineering class and top 10 in the college of engineering. Like math, ME has a pretty specific set of rules that once understood, makes the subjects a lot simpler. While taking my undergrad I tutored more than 30 peers and underclassmen across the entire range of subjects. The most important aspect of tutoring ME is teaching simple problem solving methods that help to alleviate the block that most people experience when they come across word problems. As most methods, once understood, this can be applied to lift the student in all classes.

I have always loved teaching people who are willing and eager to learn. Each tutor/student relationship must be a unique one that allows he student to learn in the ways that are best for them. We all have the power to overcome our most difficult challenges in life as long as have the willpower and sometimes the proper guidance.

Great physics lesson

My daughter (senior in HS) felt that Joel was a great help, and plans to meet again next week. Very patient and knowledgeable. Quick response time for today's emergency, too. Thank you!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Joel is a great tutor for my son. He has helped him to keep focused and to better understand algebra and word equations. I will definitely use him again for my son entering high school.
