Queens University at Charlotte, Charlotte, NC (Music Therapy)
I have been playing guitar for about 23 years, teaching for 16 years and performing for almost 20. My background comes from blues and rock but my primary focus has been on jazz and improvisation. I have taught all ages and levels since I first started teaching but I prefer students no younger than 8 years old to start. My teaching style varies on the student, their age, and what they want to learn. With younger students I tend to take a more fundamental approach by teaching basic note reading first before moving on to chords. With adolescent and adult students it all depends on what they are trying to accomplish.
Regular practice is essential and students are expected to practice in between lessons. Music, like anything that requires a skill takes time, patience and dedication. Without this the student can be expected to give up quickly. While some natural talent may help there is nothing that can substitute for hard work and perseverance. It is important for prospective students to know why they want to learn to play an instrument! Having an inspiration for why they are starting will help them by giving them a goal to work towards. Once they achieve this goal a sense of both accomplishment and fulfillment will be attained, perhaps even prompting the to set new goals.
My role as the tutor is to help the student reach these goals by giving them the correct direction and tools they need in order to do so. I am pretty easy to get along with but will quickly lose patience with students who don't practice.
My rates are competitive and I am sure that I can help with whatever musical needs you may have. If I can't I will be sure let you know. Please contact me for more information. As a performing guitarist I have written several original pieces of music. I also studied composition techniques in college
Ear training was part of my music degree in college. Recognizing different chords, intervals, and scales is also key in transcribing music, which is something I do a lot.
