Georgetown University, DC (French)
Marymount University (VA) (MEd)
I have a passion for French as well as a passion for teaching. So why not combine the two things I love to do?! French was my major field of study at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. and my junior year was spent at the Universite de Nice in France. After graduating, I worked in Brussels, Belgium as a Trainee for the European Commission. And my subsequent 8 year employment at an international organization in D.C. allowed me to continue utilizing my French skills. Eventually, I decided to pursue a Master of Education at Marymount University in Virginia and then became a Teacher for Fairfax County Public Schools with certification to teach French. I've been successfully tutoring French for the past several years.
My approach to teaching is interactive and personalized based on your needs. My priority will always be to get you to where you want to be with your French skills. My hours are flexible, and I work with students aged 12 and older in a one-on-one or small group setting. I truly hope you'll consider working with me! We have had many tutors, varying from music, languages, academics etc. But after two lessons, without a doubt Ms. Laurie is by far the best. She is highly professional, and our daughter responds to her style of teaching with enthusiasm. I would highly recommend her.
My daughter had her first lesson with Laurie which she really enjoyed it and is looking forward to her weekly lessons!!!!!
Laurie is friendly and very pleasant. I believe that she is careful in finding out my goals and will help me reach them. So far I have had two lessons and I very much enjoyed my second lesson. Her approach is excellent and Laurie takes the time to help you understand what you are studying. I look forward to my next lesson.
Laurie really connected with my daughter. She is worth every penny. I highly recommend her to tutor any age. Keep up the good work!
Laurie helped our daughter review and maintain her French. She wrote of Laurie, "She is very kind and she makes sure to get to know you. She moves at a pace that is best for you, and makes sure you understand each concept. She also makes sure to test you on each unit, and goes back over old stuff so that it sticks in your memory." We were very pleased with the results!
Laurie is very nice and we are very glad to have her for tutoring French 2 for my daughter. She works very closely with the student needs and customizes each class as per the needs. She is an excellent French tutor.
Laurie's been great for my daughter. Laurie is very positive, pleasant to work with, and brings a lot of creative ways to help my daughter learn French, from her white board to songs for learning verbs. My daughter loves her.
Today was my first lesson with Laurie K. I believe this review will not do her justice as there is much potential in this tutor/student relationship. Today was assessment day. I feel more confident to know where my strengths and weaknesses are and to build on them for the future. The assessment was a 50 question online quiz which was right at my level. It was immediately graded. Laurie went over not just what was incorrect, but the ones I guessed correctly as well. I learned just from the mistakes I made. I asked questions, she had the answers. This quiz gave a good bases for some instruction as well. I am very pleased by this tool. I gave her 4 stars because it was a very good beginning and excellent 5 star lessons, I sense, will be had in the future.
Patient, Considerate, Timely, Organized, Knowledgeable, Competent and Very Likeable are all my first impressions from Laurie K. Thank you Laurie, I am looking forward to my next instruction.
Review # 2 a month later:
I am an older student that has returned to school. After trying Basic French class and being unsatisfied with the level of progress, as well as being confused and disheartened. I decided to seeked Mme Laurie's instruction. After one lesson I was confident in her ability to ready myself for College French. I dropped Basic French 101 after 6 weeks into the course and I wished I did so sooner. I can't believe it has been a month since I started with her. I have progressed so much further than 6 weeks in a 2.5 hour twice a week class and far more homework than Mme Laurie provides. She provides just the right amount, not overwhelming but enough to solidify what I learned in the tutoring session. Mme Laurie is a delight. Her eyes sparkle when she teaches and always greets me with a smile. I look forward to my instruction, we always laugh. Speaking French does not feel unattainable. It really feels easy with her leading the way. Mme Laurie always makes sure I am speaking, writing and listening. Plenty of quizzes and end of Chapter tests which I asked for. She really wanted to know how I learn best. I like pop quizzes and she listened and she provides. Thank you Laurie. I appreciate you very much! Bonsoir.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
