Portland State University (English)
Hello and Welcome Students!
Are you an elementary, high school, or college student struggling with writing? Do you have trouble coming up with thesis ideas, or panic at the thought of putting words to a blank screen? Do you sometimes experience test anxiety, or find yourself getting “stuck” while writing? I am an experienced tutor with a B.A. degree in English, who specializes in assisting students with high school and college level writing, grammar, vocabulary, literature analysis, critical thinking, and SAT/ACT test preparation. As a published writer and editor, my goal as a tutor is to help you become a better student by supporting your individual needs, while building on your strengths, rather than focusing solely on your weaknesses. I am also a friendly, supportive, and patient tutor who values open communication, collaborative interaction, and a good sense of humor, to create a positive learning environment that fosters your continued growth and development in writing. I usually work with students at public libraries, college libraries, and through Skype for your convenience. I am also available for emergency proofreading services to ensure that your papers are perfect before submission.
Along with a persnickety and ornery cat, I live with my family in the Triangle, and serve students in the greater Triangle to improve their skills in the following areas:
Academic Writing Support:
Develop writing and composition skills
Improve grammar and sentence structure
Boost vocabulary and spelling
Strengthen reading comprehension
Analyze literature (high school and college level)
Create thesis and all phases of research paper development
Increase confidence and knowledge
Test Preparation Support:
MLA and APA citation and formatting guidelines
AP honors papers

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
