I am a full-stack LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) developer with 18 years' experience. I also have a passion for language and taught my first English as a Second Language Lessons at age 15. I have been tutoring English for 5 years and web development and web design for 2 years.

My teaching style reduces learning anxiety and programming anxiety, and helps students with long-term working memory so they keep what they learn, rather than forgetting it after the exam. I have glowing student reviews with the two other companies I teach with, showing my teaching style works well.

I help students as young as 15 learn to become self-teaching in basic grammar so we have time to deal with more advanced, difficult issues of writing like organization and development. I can help you with MLA, APA, and other types of formatting, but I will help you become independent so we can go on to make you the best writer you can be - with the hard work of brainstorming for essays, finding good sources supporting your thesis statement and getting your thesis statement in the best possible shape based on the sources available to you. I use the method of the Harvard Writing Lab, which has been shown to be the very best for helping people improve their writing. Through the years I have improved it with and emphasis on a love of language and specific techniques for relieving anxiety, helping focus, and keeping what you learn in long-term working memory.

I graduated with an English language BA, Cum Laude, and was the Poetry Editor Emeritus of our university's arts magazine. I also won the esteemed Jameson Essay Award of Wheaton College, and the First Place Christianity and Literature University Student Award in the Essay category, and second place for Poetry.

Since then, I have helped many with their writing, from high school students to post-graduate adults, and scholars working on research and academic writing. My students' reviews on the platform where I teach writing and English affirm that I do superb work, and many find I am the best tutor they have ever had. My Masters was in philosophy, specializing in the mind and how people learn. I use this knowledge to help my students reduce their learning anxiety and to remember what they have been taught.

Students affirm that my method of teaching helps them enormously in getting over programming anxiety, which is one of the main reasons that learners of programming give up or fail. They also affirm that I teach in a way so they actually remember what they learned; as there is a problem with many forgetting after an exam, or when the course is over.

I have designed many applications from the ground up, but am also comfortable with frameworks. I teach programmers gently and patiently, but the kind of guidance that helps them become the kind of solid, stable, security-aware programmers capable of advanced Object-Oriented programming which employers are looking for. After many years as a freelance full-stack LAMP developer, I have found that I enjoy helping others learning code a bit more than coding itself, which is why I now tutor more than I do programming work. My teaching methodology is based on scientific research and has proven itself in relieving students' anxiety and helping them remember complex, difficult subject matters.

I can also help you with such things as Wordpress, web presence for your business, and social media presence coaching.

My love of learning is positively infectious; students tend to notice my passion for learning very quickly. But it is a very gentle passion, as I have a great deal of helping students also through anxiety, and know that the only truly excellent tutors are also good listeners.

Feel free to contact me about your learning needs. I can also give you tips on getting the very best learning experience from your university computer lab or writing lab, or your other tutors. I have done a lot of research on the ups and downs of students in tutoring, so I know how you can optimize your approach in getting the best supplementary education. I am passionate about your education - wherever, however you get it.

I have tutored for 2 years elsewhere - where students pay up to $65 for my services - but am new to Wyzant. I can teach you for 6 weeks at the rate you start at. Beyond that - we'll talk.

Graphic Design

I have had to do a lot of graphics work in my 18 years as a web developer, and have designed many sites and quite a few logos on my own as needed with GIMP. I've also helped one advanced graphics major in art school with her graphic design, and she loved it. If you want graphics as part of a general web design package I can certainly help you; it usually helps to stay with the same tutor. But if you only want to learn graphics, and have no needs for web design or web development, I would advise a graphics professional; I am extremely good with GIMP, but am not as good as many professionals, and I don't teach Photoshop, InDesign, or 3-D graphics like Blender.

Computer

CSS,

CSS

CSS fascinated me from the first moment I began developing websites in 2001. Much has changed with CSS3, but I can help you with the "bare essentials" of CSS which tend to get people exceedingly frustrated: floats, widths, positioning issues, and lay-over (z-index) problems, as mostly "old-school" developers can - patiently helping you through the complex and frustrating stuff step-by-step, helping you gain solidity in your knowledge and practice, and keeping you from wanting to pull out all your hair. But I can teach you the CSS3 "blinky fun stuff" emphasized in many web development classes today: keyframes, animations, glowy stuff with box-shadow, etc. etc.. My eighteen years of experience in actual development and two in tutoring will help soothe your nerves and get you on track toward becoming a great designer and developer. I have also helped one graphics major with graphics and design, so I can help you with the aesthetic side of CSS as well; and I have earned many superlative reviews from the two other companies I work with for my teaching students web design and css.

HTML,

HTML

I have 18 years as a full-stack LAMP developer and two years experience teaching HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, and MySQL. My reviews for teaching web development with the two other companies I work with are consistently superb, students highly enthusiastic. I teach so you REMEMBER what you learn, in a way that relieves programming anxiety.
JavaScript,

JavaScript

I am a full-stack web developer, and can teach you basic to intermediate client-side javascript. If you have advanced javascript needs or need to do server-side javascript, I would refer you to someone who is either a front-end web developer or a good Node.js person. Honesty is important in tech business - we are all limited, this is one of my limitations. But my teaching technique is excellent enough that quite a few beg me to continue them teaching them things that really aren't my specialty - since I teach patiently, helping with anxiety, and they actually LEARN and remember.
JQuery,

JQuery

I have been developing with jQuery for more than 10 years. I am an intermediate user as a full-stack web developer, not an advanced jQuery programmer like a front-end developer. My expertise can help you through rather advanced web development classes; but for the most advanced jQuery programming, you would do better with a front-end developer.
PHP,

PHP

My two years of tutoring students in PHP have been rewarding; I have developed a way of teaching them gently and patiently, step-by-step, so they do not become anxious. With 18 years' experience in PHP development, I know very well how to guide people from their very first steps of "hello world" to rather complex object-oriented, MVC applications. I aim to help students become self-learning so we can focus on the most difficult parts: debugging their code, and the understanding of application architecture. I am one of the few programmers who actually studies the psychology of programming, so when I teach "coding zen" (to help with good, maintainable code that employers are working for, and to prevent coding anxiety), students benefit greatly; my Masters degree was in philosophy related to the mind, experience, and learning.
Web Design

Web Design

As a full-stack web developer for 18 years, I have been responsible for the design of many sites from the bottom up, including the initial graphic mock-ups and site architecture plans. I can help you think out the basic site requirements, keeping in mind principles of information architecture and UI-X. I tutor GIMP if you need graphics; I do not tutor specific wireframe products or "prefab" tools like Dreamweaver, I will help you jump directly into HTML so you don't feel you even need Dreamweaver.

I have been teaching Dutch for about a year now. I am able to teach my students in a way that helps them get the language into Long-Term Working Memory - so they don't forget quickly, but rather keep what they learn. I am a fluent Dutch speaker and good general language teacher; for teaching Dutch I use the highly-regarded text Go Dutch! by Mariaan de Vooght and Andre Lefevere. Sessions are accompanied by Dutch / Flemmish cultural material.

Writing

I have helped students with academic writing and research for decades. I have developed a coaching technique based on the Harvard Writing Lab's Write / Review / Revise cycle, improved with ways of removing writing anxiety and helping long-term working memory based on scientific work in neurology and the principle of subsidiary focal integration and awareness. My students concur that it works very well, and they leave me glowing testimonials.

Bible Studies

I did coursework in both Old Testament and New Testament as an undergraduate at Wheaton College. I also have done extensive study in hermeneutics, with a full class on Hans-Georg Gadamer's work Truth and Method from hermeneutics expert Dr. Bruce Benson. My knowledge of hermeneutics has helped me lead three highly successful Bible studies, one which went on for nine years; in each of these, my goal has been not only to help the group become active Bible readers, but also to lead Bible studies themselves. One of my Bible study students is now a Christian author and speaker.

Working with James

James has done a fine job - I am not very good about reviews, but I have been happy with his help. I am having some death in the family issues, so my sessions with James may be intermittent. Thank you, Tom Eckert

Intelligent, Funny, and Knowledgeable

He is so full of information, it was a very fruitful experience listening to his lesson. He also adjusts his pace well according to his student, good adaptability. He knows how to teach and keep his student in mind as he shows you code. Very code oriented, provides a platform that allows you to code directly alongside him in real time.

PHP complex code made it simple for understanding

I had some PHP and HTML code that I had to understand / change / maintain. He explained quickly and CLEARLY where the hangup was in my thinking. Also suggested some changes to increase security. VERY helpful. James C. has REAL WORLD experience with coding and it showed in how easy he was to deal with.

Very helpful

My need from Wordpress are really quite simple. I will never design my own website BUT I need to know how to at least edit my site. James is the man. Both knowledgeable as well as personable, I have already gotten a small (but important) part of that skill imparted to me in one lesson!! I know we will go a lot farther and I look forward to it.
