About Sarah

Why I Enjoy Tutoring
Ever since I was a small child, I've had a high level of curiosity about the world - from languages to economics to art to cuisine, and everything in between. I've always loved learning new things. Helping other people connect the dots or master a topic they previously found challenging is part of how I invite others to see the beauty that I see in the way our world works.

I started tutoring when I was in high school - both helping my classmates as well as formal tutoring of middle school students. I've been teaching others in one way or another ever since - from having a group of people whom I coached through Calculus during my freshman year of college, to the colleagues that I taught how to use Excel, to the grad school classmates that I helped learn R (a statistical programming environment/language). I have had many people tell me not to waste my time - other people had already tried to teach them and they already knew that they would never understand Excel, regression analysis, conjugation of French verbs, using algebra to balance capacity planning in the workplace, be able to draw, you name it. When I see someone succeed at accomplishing something they doubted they would be able to do, I have an immense feeling of personal satisfaction. When I am coaching someone, I'm not teaching them a topic - I am helping them find the potential that they already have inside them to be successful. This is how I pay it forward.

Academic Background
I have a strong academic background. I was a National Merit Scholar and Olin Scholar at Washington University in St. Louis. While at WashU, I TA'd MBA classes. I graduated from WashU early, at the age of twenty. When I was twenty-three, I was accepted into the University of Chicago Booth School of Business as a Chicago Business Fellow. While at Chicago Booth, I made significantly above average grades and played a leadership role in student government. I was subsequently awarded the KPMG Award for Leadership and Scholarship.

Excel
I have been using Excel for over 15 years, and have been teaching others to use it for more than 8 years. I specialize in helping adult professionals become adept at Excel to help them be more effective at work and school. I enjoy Excel because it gives you the power to make decisions based on facts and analysis. I am an Excel power user and whether you want to start at the basics with how to navigate Excel to open, save, and close files, or you want to learn how to create multi-layered pivot tables, Vlookups, and Hlookups, I can help you!

Writing
I have extensive experience writing for both academia and business. With perfect Verbal scores on both the SAT and the GMAT, you can rest assured that I have the grammar and vocabulary skills to help you express yourself effectively and professionally. And with experience grading papers as an MBA-level TA, I know what your professors are looking for you to communicate in your assignments.

Application Essays and Personal Essays
I particularly enjoy helping people with their applications for university and graduate school, including essays, personal statements, and video essays. I take a holistic approach to the application process to ensure we effectively communicate who you are and what you'll contribute to the community, crafting a strong application that will make you stand out from the crowd. I've helped people get into Georgetown, Northwestern, the University of Chicago, USC, UGA, SLU, Smith, and many other schools.

Test Prep
I have received strong scores on all of the standardized tests that I have taken. When I was 12, I took the SAT as part of the Duke Tip program and earned a 1300, which ranked me in the top 10% of high school seniors. Most recently, I received a 750 on the GMAT, which is in the top 1% of scores. I have some simple techniques that allow me to be very successful on these types of tests and I would welcome the opportunity to share them with you or your student.

Public Speaking
I'm sure you've heard that many people rank speaking in public as being more scary than death. Well, I used to be just as scared of it - but after learning how to overcome that fear, I now truly love to speak in public! That doesn't mean I don't get nervous. On the contrary, it means I have learned how to channel and control my nerves to help me be an even better speaker.

In my career, I have given countless presentations, frequently to groups of 100+ people. Members of my audience often include C-level executives, but just as frequently include entry-level employees and middle management. I've led formal training classes and in the past was frequently involved in theatre.
I regularly receive very positive feedback from my talks - I am often compared to a politician, which in today's environment I worry might soon not be a compliment! - and have coached many of my peers and direct reports into improved presentation and public speaking skills. If you could use some support in preparing for a big presentation, or simply want to learn more about how to be a credible and captivating speaker, I would enjoy sharing with you the techniques and skills that I've learned over the years.

Interview Coaching
I also have extensive recruiting experience, having conducted over 500 business interviews. I've led interview training programs and resume review sessions as a senior interviewer and interview trainer. I would be pleased to help prepare you for your next important interview so that you make your best impression.

Closing Summary
To put it simply - I love helping other people regain confidence and/or find joy in learning. If I could possibly help you or your student on the path to success, I encourage you to reach out to me for us to see if we might be a good fit to work together.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have an undergraduate degree in Business from Washington University in St. Louis. While there, I often tutored my peers as part of study groups. I was also a TA for an MBA level course. I have an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. I frequently helped my classmates study and consider new approaches to course material. At both schools I received above average grades and was regularly on the Dean's List. My business resume includes being a C level officer for a successful start up that now employees over 200 people - there were less than 10 when I started. While there I pitched to VC firms and received a 7 figure investment from a major VC.

Career Development

I have extensive recruiting experience, including being responsible for hiring and firing for a 225mm/year business. As a former corporate senior interviewer and interview trainer, I've reviewed countless resumes and conducted over 500 interviews. I've trained others in how to sit on both sides of the interview chair. I've also mentored new hires in the workplace, counseling them in their career development. I have 10 years of experience in people management, including conducting performance appraisals and administering performance reviews.

Cooking

I attended Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School in Paris, where I received a certificate in Cuisine and was 3rd in my class. I received an especially high score for taste and sauces. Professionally, I worked for one of the major 'dinner kit' companies where I managed product development including coming up with new recipes and creating instructions.

I particularly enjoy teaching people who think they can't cook or who are intimated by cooking. I also find satisfaction in helping people get out of a 'cooking rut' where they make the same few dishes over and over. Showing them simple new techniques and flavor combinations can help open up a whole new world at mealtime!

French

I have lived, studied and worked full time in French in Paris. I have also traveled extensively around France.

Marketing

I have a degree in Marketing from Washington University in St. Louis, earning a 4.0 Marketing GPA. While at WashU, I was the TA for an MBA level Marketing class. I also studied Marketing while receiving my MBA at the University of Chicago, and helped many of my peers with their analysis and papers.

Microsoft Excel

I have fifteen years experience using Excel and eight years of experience in giving Excel instruction to professionals.

Microsoft Outlook

I have been using Microsoft Outlook for 10+ years. I have trained others in how to transition from Lotus Notes to Outlook during implementations. I am familiar with setting up meetings and recurring appointments, creating email lists and groups, BCC'ing people, out of offices, and pretty much everything Outlook can do.

Public Speaking

I started my public speaking journey in high school with experience in local theatre. At the same time, I won an award for Extemporaneous Speaking. At Washington University in St. Louis, I was a member of their award-winning Mock Trial team. At the National Finals competition ('Golds' for those of you in the MT world) I received the coveted Outstanding/Top Ten Witness award.

In my career, I have given countless presentations, frequently to groups of 100+ people. Members of my audience often include C-level executives, but just as frequently include entry-level employees and middle management. This means that no matter who your audience is, I know how you should tailor your approach so that you make a connection! I regularly receive very positive feedback from my talks - I am often compared to a politician, which in today's environment I worry might soon not be a compliment! - and have coached many of my peers and direct reports into improved presentation and public speaking skills.

SAT Reading

I scored perfect scores on the verbal portion of the SAT both times that I took it.
