About Mai-Lis

I love children and find connecting to them very second nature. The most important element for a successful tutor-student relationship is establishing a trusting, respectful, and fun relationship. If a student cannot and will not relate to their tutor, then not much will be gained from the experience. Part of the tutor's responsibility is fostering the desire to learn. My students love working with me because I love working with them.

I am trained in literacy using the Orton-Gillingham approach: a sequential phonics-based system that teaches the basics of word formation before whole meanings. The method accommodates and utilizes the three learning modalities, or pathways, through which people learn—visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Unlike some scripted and rigid reading programs, the Orton-Gillingham Approach is a system that allows for flexibility. I was trained to use this approach through the Augustine Literacy Project and have been implementing it with students for over a year.

In college, I tested out of the basic writing/English classes and started working in the writing center during my first semester. Since then, I have accumulated vast writing experiences. I love grammar, writing, spelling, and composition. I am also a ghost writer for several companies.

For early readers and students who are have difficulty with phonics, I break words into segmented sounds and then show them how to blend the sounds back together. I enjoy the process and pass that enjoyment onto my students. For students who are having issues with fluency, we work on reading out loud while learning to segment larger words for quicker comprehension.

I love words. Period. And I love children. The combination of the two is beautiful, especially when growth and confidence increase with each interaction. Typically, kids who do not like to read are the same kids who are having difficulties. I make it fun and achievable.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Currently, I am a writer for two websites, as well as a ghost writer for several business blogs.

From structuring a sentence to writing a paragraph, I can help students organize their thoughts using a friendly, approachable manner; patience; and good listening skills.

Phonics

I was trained to teach literacy using the Orton-Gillingham approach through the Augustine Literacy Project. I have been using this multi-sensory approach for over a year, to teach readers how to hear and segment sounds, while learning to blend them together to form a word. Words are made up of individual speech sounds, and the letters of written words graphically represent those speech sounds. Children can be taught phonological awareness through sound, tactile methods, and through the recognition of patterns. Without a solid understanding of phonics, a reader will continue to struggle.
