About Grant

I have been teaching saxophone and piano since graduation UNC Chapel Hill in 1996. I have a music degree from UNCC, a communications degree from UNC, and I studied my masters degree at University of New Orleans where I studied piano privately every week with the legendary Ellis Marsalis (father of Wynton and Branford). I have taught 100's of students how to approach reading, improvising, writing, and to critically think about music, both in performance and listening actively to music. Music is a something can easily be understood and performed with the right tools(books, teacher, instrument) and discipline(i.e. practice).

Through my experience and learning from some of the best teachers in the country, I have picked up some of the best techniques to becoming a well rounded and proficient musician. I pass on everything to my students when they are ready for each new concept and in a short time, my students are playing amazing music and often this helps them in their school studies and overall well being. There are many studies linking music arts to better grades and improved concentration. Also, music is one of the best social activities there is...jamming with my buddies is still one of my favorite activities in life.

I have played music for a living since being hired by Carowinds when I was 16. I've played from New Orleans to New York in every venue you can imagine. Also, I've studied with more than a dozen doctorates of music along with some of the leading artists in the country. If you want to learn from one of the most qualified and experienced musicians in the region, I'm the guy you're looking for. My rates are super competitive as well, I'm not teaching to get rich, just to pass on my knowledge and make an honest living.

I have a few spots left on Tuesday and Thursday in the 28211 area code (Cotswald). My lessons are fun and challenging, but I'll get you where you want to go if you work at the concepts that I teach.
