I was born in the United States and became a landed immigrant in Canada at the age of fifteen. Upon graduation, I served as a Teaching Assistant in a high school level Literature class. The Lead Instructor would separate all of her "problem kids," while she taught the main lesson to the "good kids." Ever since, I've taken great pride in working with so called "problem students." I've found over my nineteen year career as an educator that given the right instruction, the "problem students" tend to be the brilliant ones.
This experience has shaped my tutoring philosophy. I try to empathize with the student and their background. Recognizing the social, cultural and psychological factors that effect learning is key to knowledge building. I have worked with business executives, seminary students, economically disadvantaged children, medical practitioners and migrant workers. The breadth of experience allows me to adapt to the unique needs of a student. Most recently I have taught for Global LT, South Piedmont Community College and Borealis Language Academy in Charlotte, NC. I am currently undertaking the North Carolina ESOL and College and Career Readiness Certification. I have my Standardized Test for Assessment of Reading (STAR) Certification, Wake Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Level III Interpreter Certification. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
