When I first decided to get into teaching ESL in 2011, I enrolled at UC Berkeley Extension and completed a graduate certificate in TESL before transferring to The University of San Francisco's School of Education from 2012 to 2013, graduating with a Master's degree in TESOL and a GPA of 4.0. My master's thesis involved designing a Business English curriculum which combined teaching English with providing guidance on US business culture to highly skilled foreign workers.
Despite my Business English thesis at University, I enjoy tutoring all kinds of English learners with very different needs and learning styles. I volunteered for a year with Refugee Transitions, a non-profit organization in San Jose, CA and spent evenings working with a refugee family from the Middle East. I also have experience teaching English to a large class of recent immigrants from a variety of countries (mostly Spanish speaking) at an adult community school in San Mateo, CA. In 2012 I volunteered in Ecuador, teaching English to middle and high school students. I believe in a friendly, sympathetic, yet focused approach and in providing English language skills based on the needs and goals of the student.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
