University of North Carolina Wilmington (Communication Studie)
My name is MaryPat and I graduated from University of North Carolina Wilmington with a degree in Communication Studies and a minor in Journalism. After college, I took my career in a completely unexpected direction when I was accepted into the Teach for America program. This path landed me in Charlotte teaching 3rd grade at a Title I school. My second year teaching, I moved to teaching 2nd graders; and then finally served as an interventionist for the entire 2nd grade during the 2014-2015 school year. This was one of my favorite roles, because I got to work with the students who struggled the most in math and reading in a small group or one-on-one setting. After instructing large classes of students with varying levels of need; I felt like my position as an interventionist allowed me the time, setting, and resources to help the students that needed me most be able to succeed.
I have such a strong passion for helping students and assisting them and gaining the skill set they need to be successful in and out of the classroom. With that being said, I made the difficult (but also rewarding) decision to take a step back from teaching for the 2015-2016 school year to stay at home with my 15-month-old daughter. Although I feel like I am still teaching and learning every day, I miss being in the classroom and witnessing the "I get it!" faces on my students daily. With a house packed full of teacher resources, I would love to be able to put them back into use!
When I began teaching, I was sure I was going to dislike providing math instruction because I can remember waterfalls of tears during math homework in my elementary school years. What I quickly came to find out, is my initial struggle with math makes me a better math teacher. Because I am not incredibly "in my head" and "automatic" when it comes to math, I find it is much easier for me to explain not only how to tackle a math problem; but why we are completing it this way. I like for students to be able to "draw it" (my favorite, because visuals often result in light bulbs!), "write it" (in numerical or word form), and "say it" (explain it to me!)
While working as an academic interventionist for struggling 2nd graders, my initial main focus and training was in building strength in reading and comprehension. I am armed with a wealth of resources and strategies to help students gain confidence in this area.
Being that common core strands continue to 'build' for each grade level; and often the students I taught in the classroom and as an interventionist came to be working significantly below grade level, I have a strong knowledge of K-3 common core standards. With that being said, as a classroom teacher I was always "looking ahead" to see where I wanted my students to be headed in order to achieve success. I have read and planned around most common core standards for all elementary levels.
Not only the fact that I have been in the classroom as an instruction, but that I have taught very recently and am aware an informed on expectations of elementary schoolers exemplifies that I have strong elementary qualifications.
My training and time spent in the role of academic interventionist focused heavily on phonics, as often times when students lack a strong phonetic foundation they begin to fall behind in all other aspects of reading. Strengthening phonics understanding was vital for my students to see successes in reading comprehension; so this was something we tackled daily.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
