About Sarah

Teaching is my profession. After 12 years as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher and a Special Education teacher, I have started to teach adults at CPCC. My experience is with elementary students. However I have taught and worked with all ages.

I started out as a math major at the University of the South and love math. I have taught ESL for the past seven years. I enjoy teaching vocabulary and reading skills. As an ESL teacher, I have had much experience in teaching phonics and reading.

I look forward to tutoring and to having my students succeed in their academic studies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

As an elementary Special Education Teacher, I worked with students in all subjects. My emphasis was on reading, writing, and math but I also taught science and social studies. Recently I received my MAT in TESOL or teaching English to students of other languages. I have been selected as a NEH and NCCAT scholar. I have attended numerous continuing education courses on teaching elementary education.

Phonics

I have taught ESL or English as a Second Language for the past seven years as a teacher with the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system. As an ESL teacher, much emphasis is placed on phonics in teaching students to read. I have my masters from UNCC in TESOL and feel I am qualified to teach phonics.

Reading

I teach reading skills and comprehension.
