About Scott

Several years ago I left corporate America to stay home with my children. I took a number of graduate teaching classes at UNCC to so I could help them learn. As my kids got older, I begin working for local Schools as a Title I Tutor. I work with small groups of students on both reading and math skills. I volunteered in classroom teaching subjects as varied as how Profit = Revenue - Cost, to how the tilt of the Earth's axis is the reason for the seasons on Earth.

I am a extremely curious person and my interests are diverse. I like to take things apart to see how they work. I love to hike, bike, swim, kayak, anything outdoors. I love to paint and draw. I love to play with new and interesting apps that my students can use to create innovate project submissions.

I would love to help your student be a successful and confident reader and mathematician. I am very familiar with both standard and alternative approaches to math and reading. I have had much success using phonics programs to improve reading.

Thank you for your consideration.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

As a tutor as CMS elementary schools I have had the opportunity to work with many teachers. Most often the activities teachers requested help with directly correlated to the Common Core standards. I have help many students with EOG prep

Elementary (K-6th)

Several years ago I left corporate America to become a stay at home dad. When my children were young, I worked with them every day using Montessori techniques. As they got older I used constructivist techniques to teach them both reading and math. I used the Handwriting Without Tears to teach handwriting. As my children entered elementary school I took 26 hours of teaching classes at UNCC. For the last several years I have worked at CMS Schools as a Title I Tutor, where I work with small groups of students on Math and Reading Skills.

Handwriting

Most schools today do not have a set hand writing program. In today's demanding classrooms handwriting takes a back sit to other areas of study. When my children begin writing I chose to work with them on my own. I purchased Handwriting Without Tears. HWT is a structure approach to learning the basic shapes used to form all letters. Using manipulatives and a small chalk board children practice the motion of letters. Letters are not taught in alphabetical order, but are grouped together by the shapes that letters are composed of. As time has allowed, I have used this same program with children at the elementary schools I have worked at. There is now a app that mimics many of the aspects of the program.
