About Alyssa

Greetings! As an innovative tutor, I help students achieve their academic goals by developing customized learning environments and teaching strategies based on individual needs, strengths, and interests. I'm passionate about education and have a strong academic background; I attended one the top boarding schools in the country, and I hold a B.A in History with a minor in Germanic studies from Chapman University, where I graduated cum laude. I currently run a successful business as a freelance editor, copywriter, and data analyst.

I tutor high school, undergraduate, and graduate-level students in English, history, literature, writing, and study skills—including organization and time management. I'm an expert in all current AP History courses (U.S, European, World), and I structure my AP tutoring around the new 2015-16 revised AP exam format and scoring rubrics.

As a tutor, my other area of expertise is in test prep for the new 2016 SAT, and the revised GRE. I create effective, personalized study plans for each of my test prep students, including deconstructing and explaining the format and content of these exams to help my students maximize their scores.

Many of my SAT & GRE prep students also hire me as a college admissions counselor to advise them during their application and admissions process. I work with high school age students applying to college, as well as with undergraduate students applying to Masters and Ph.D. level programs. I help my students construct the strongest possible applications by working with them on all components of the admissions process, including college essays, resumes, CV, statement of purpose (SOP), interviews, and edited writing samples or portfolios.

Why should you hire me?
I offer all new students a FREE consultation before scheduling their first tutoring session so we can discuss academic goals, learning styles, and effective teaching methods. I use these consultations to better understand a student's learning preferences, which helps me prepare for their our tutoring session. If you are a student interested in my services, this free consultation is a great opportunity to get to know me better!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I currently work with students from across the country in their college admissions process for undergraduate to Ph.D. level programs. I have personally been through the admissions process at private boarding school (high school), and at undergraduate and Ph.D. level programs. I work in academia and education reform and have therefore developed extensive contacts at various elite universities and graduate programs, which gives me untapped insight into the admissions process that I continue to supplement with extensive research on HigherEd, the Chronicles of Higher Education, EdTech, and Hack Education.

European History

I hold a bachelor’s degree in history, and I have tutored many high school and college students, both individually and in groups, in a variety of historical subjects. In tutoring students in history, I focus on research and analytical writing, test prep and study skills, and general comprehension of the material. I tutor in all subsections of history, including AP history courses (World, U.S, European).

GRE

I am an effective GRE tutor because I have experience both helping students prepare for this test, as well as taking this exam myself. When I prepared for the GRE, I developed time-effective studying techniques that I now use when tutoring other students in GRE prep. I have an in-depth knowledge of the test’s format, and my GRE scores rank at or above the 90th percentile in both the verbal reasoning and analytical writing sections.

SAT Reading

I scored above the 90th percentile when I took the SAT, which means I have an in-depth knowledge of the older style SAT format, but more importantly, I have spent the past year learning and researching the new 2016 SAT format. I help my test prep students transition to, and master the new SAT by explaining the recent changes in the exam and teaching strategies and study habits created specifically for the revised SAT.

Writing

I am an expert in English, writing, and literature because of my strong liberal arts background and career as a professional editor and copywriter. I am proficient in various writing formats including, APA, MLA, and Chicago Manual of Style. I work with students on all stages of the writing process, including helping them cultivate skills like critical thinking, conducting research and citing sources, organizing and developing ideas, and analytical writing. I also help students with the sentence structure, grammar and vocabulary in their writing.
