The pure joy of reading captivated me easily and quickly once I began to read chapter books at the very young age of just seven years old. Once I realized just how much I was able to learn about all kinds of people, places and things without ever having to leave my own comfort zone, I was hooked! My joy of reading allowed me to also fall in love with learning, which led me to excel in a lot of other subjects (Science, Social Studies, English, etc.). I was always an honor student and frequently asked to tutor my peers starting in the second grade. I've always dreamed of becoming a teacher and was overjoyed when I applied and was accepted to Teach for America as a 2015 Elementary Teacher corp member.
As part of the Teach for America process I had to study and pass an exam that covered the Foundations of Reading. I also had to participate in an intensive five-week Teacher Training Summer Institute held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this past June-July, where I was a first grade English summer school teacher. That was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and I learned a lot from my little first graders and their families. Specifically, just how important it is that each student understand that they are very capable of grasping whatever they put their mind to, just as long as they give it an honest try. Also, that each and every one of us learns differently and that it is my job as a teacher/ tutor to find out how my student learns best and then be creative with the ways in which we accomplish learning goals. I look forward to elevating the literacy level of each and every student that crosses my path.
I passed the Pearson NC Foundations of Reading Exam, which focuses on all aspects of teaching a student how to read. The focus of the exam was phonological and phonemic awareness skills that ensure increased fluency and comprehension.
During my experience as a first-grade English teacher I accumulated many tools and creative strategies, which work with all kinds of differentiated learning capablities and styles.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
