University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Education)
I went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for my undergraduate degree. I chose to study Middle Grades Education because I have grown up with a love for learning and for working with children. I moved to the Charlotte area in 2013 to begin my teaching career in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. I currently teach 7th grade science and tutor students grade 3 to 8 outside of school.
I began tutoring while I was in college working with students in Chapel Hill on reading and writing skills. I enjoy tutoring because it gives me an opportunity to work one on one with a student with a goal of gaining understanding and confidence. Learning is a shared process and tutoring gives me an opportunity to partner with my students to build a strong foundation so that they are successful inside and out of the classroom.
At the University of North Carolina I focused on Biology and Geology within the School of Education. This focus paired with a variety of science classes that I have taken give me a deep concept knowledge of the sciences.
I enjoy tutoring students in reading because of my background in reading as a hobby and as a learner. With a personal love of reading, I know the importance of reading as a foundation for learning in all other subject areas. I am currently working on a reading initiative in CMS to promote interdisciplinary literacy.
As an experienced science teacher, I am confident that I have a full understanding of the concepts that are presented in elementary science classes. These concepts are those that are built upon in middle school.
In addition, I have tutored many students on developing their own "study skills". Many students are lacking this component of learning and it is a vital piece of being able to independently be successful in the school setting.
I feel confident that my students have shown great growth and success because of our tutoring sessions. Learning is a powerful tool and one that I enjoy sharing with my students. Please contact me to learn more about what I can provide to students and to set up a meeting in a public location to get started. Thank you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a certified middle school teacher, this is part of what I teach each day at school and during my classroom tutoring sessions. I spend a large amount of time teaching students how to manage their own learning outside of the classroom using tools such as a planner, flashcards, online study games, and note taking. All of these skills allow students to be confident in their ability to learn, which leads to greater success in their classes.
