About Sylvia

My name is Sylvia C. I am a PhD candidate. I have a B.A in History, a M.Ed in ESL and K-12 Curriculum & Instruction. I graduated Sum Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude. I have been in education for almost 20 years and have tutored Kindergarten through high school in literacy, math, writing, history and study skills.

It is my belief that everyone has the ability to learn when they are given opportunities to explore their level of knowledge. My objective is to provide personalized instruction needed to excel and succeed. Education opens up the world to opportunity! When students learn the appropriate study skills for their style of learning, they will be able to be successful in school.

I offer tutoring in Grammar, Proofreading, Reading, Vocabulary, Writing, Math, ESL, History, English, and SAT & ACT Prep.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have been a Title I Tutor for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools for over 8 years. Common Core is what is utilized within the school district. I also hold a M.Ed in Curriculum in Instruction.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a Title I Tutor for grades K-8 for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools for over 8 years. I also hold a M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction. I graduated Magna Cum Laude.

K-6 covers all subjects. I have taught and tutored K-6 students for over 8 years. Students are tutored in a small group setting or one-on-one. In 8 years, I have tutored hundreds of students in all subject areas to assist them in improving their academic skills. In 2014, 60 out of 85 students that I tutored made a 3 or better on the NC End of Grade Test.

I tutor:

Reading skills and taught for K-6 - Reading, Letter formation; sounds recognition; sight words; reading comprehension, including main idea, following directions, details, conclusions; reading rate; critical thinking skills.

Math Concepts and Computation: Number formation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, word problems, Critical thinking

Vocabulary: Word recognition, word meaning, words in context, multiple meaning

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored ESL students for over 4 years. I have a M.Ed in ESL. I graduated Sum Cum Laude.

Handwriting

I have been assisting students improve their handwriting and writing skills for over 8 years. Prior to teaching handwriting, I administer a Print Tool assessment. The assessment allows me to check for placement, size, start, sequence, control, spacing and memory. The Big 3 Curriculum is utilized.

Sylvia is very patient with my daughter, over the last few weeks I see the difference in how much Lauren's confidence as grown with her math skills. I look forward to seeing her grades this school year. I know she will be proud of her new found skills.
