About Jodi

Hello,

My name is Jodi and I am from the United states, but currently living in Peru, South America I am a world traveler- having visited approximately 20 different countries. I thrive on acquiring knowledge, using natural talents and promoting self worth. I became certified to teach English as a second language in 2012.I have taught and prepared several students to advance in the desired language of their choice. Since I am currently living in South America- online teaching is the best way to have a session. I do require a 6 hour cancellation notice via email or phone call.

I know the challenges and struggles of learning a language. I also know the joy of being able to hold a conversation in a foreign language for the first time, being able to write correctly and being able to fully speak a foreign language. I know first hand many different methods to teach, learn, understand, modify and practice to language skills. I am an interactive teacher, I use music, muscle memory, movies, books, acting out, and of course going to places for total immersion. I love teaching and with my methods, I know you will be reading, writing and speaking with more confidence.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am a certified TEFL instructor. I have taught ESL for the past three years and I love it! I have had the opportunity to teach several people to speak, read, and write English. I know how difficult English can be, and I have learned through experience how to be patient, encouraging, and how to use different techniques to help each individual meet their personal goals.

Grammar

English grammar can be challenging. I teach it using different methods. For example the use of diagrams, speech, audio, dialogues and background of why certain words are used or placed in specific orders. I and certified to teach English as a Second Language and explaining and understanding English grammar is necessary. Plus it's fun!

Portuguese

I have experience teaching several clients Portuguese. I worked with Brazilians and learned different forms of speech- business, day to day and slang. I taught myself the language and worked hard to speak correctly. Also, I was invited to interpret to Portuguese speaking delegates in Washington DC at the Smithsonian and at a convention in Maryland. I also spent time in Brazil in order to make progress with the language.

Public Speaking

I take a public speaking course every Thursday night to keep improving. I work with several students currently and business men and women on projects to increase their confidence in public speaking. The best method besides practice of delivery is simple coaching and helping students to believe in themselves, their words and use of outlines.

Reading

Reading and comprehension is included in my certification for teaching English as a Second Language. An effective method that I use is reading out loud slowly, using questions, and considering background information and using imagination. Feeling has to be put into the text. I try to get the student to put themselves or someone they know into the reading. Also, I check to see if vocabulary could be improved.

Spanish

I have been speaking, reading, and writing Spanish for 7 years. I taught myself the language and know many different methods to help the language stick to the brain. I am very conversational and love to use ,music and television program to not only get involved with culture, but to help the student to train their ear. I also use workbooks to practice writing and sentence structure.

TOEFL

I have been teaching and tutoring in the TOEFL field for over 3 years and it's a love of mine. I am also certified in this area and take continuing education courses. I can't wait to help you reach your goal!
