In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a North Carolina certified teacher currently teaching 1st grade. I have been working with students in the early childhood range (preschool-2nd grade) for several years. Handwriting is one of the fundamental skills with which I have helped students. I own and have used resources from the curriculum, "Handwriting Without Tears". I know that proper letter formation is absolutely imperative for students' future success in efficient and effective written expression. It is also very important to teach student the correct letter formation (d'nealian) so that they are able to seamlessly move in to cursive writing. I am very comfortable with proper letter formation and know how to use multisensory resources to teach letter formation in a way that students remember easily and creates effective muscle memory.
I am currently teaching first grade in Charlotte Mecklenburg School District. I am a certified Early Childhood Education teacher (B.S. Early Childhood Education) and a certified Reading teacher (M.Ed. Literacy Education) I have also completed a 75 hour course using the Orton Gillingham approach to reading instruction. Orton Gillingham focuses heavily on phonics. My undergraduate and graduate degrees have given me the essential phonics knowledge (phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, phoneme segmentation and syllabication) to all of my first graders including those with learning disabilities.
