- Donna K :-)
I enjoy making learning a FUN experience for students! If one is relaxed and enjoying oneself, he or she will learn much more easily. I enjoy watching the self-confidence gained from students realizing how smart they already are as well as watching them acquire the tools to progress even further on their own in the future!
As a former teacher in a variety of different roles, I offer the depth and breadth of experience to tutor in many different areas. I graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with highest honors in English and a minor in French. I have taught Elementary school - Second through Fourth Grades, using the proven Mae Carden Method. My students began the year failing standardized end of grade tests and ended the year in the 80 and 90th percentiles! Their parents were amazed and delighted, as were the students themselves. I have also taught high school Math and French, as well as Art at all levels.
TEST PREP SPECIALTY
For the past 2 years, I have predominantly been specializing in tutoring SAT and ACT prep courses, as well as GRE for Graduate School Admissions and GMAT for MBA School admissions. Personally, I score consistently highly - 99th percentile - on all standardized tests, but I only mention this not to brag but to demonstrate that I can offer many tips and tricks designed to maximize the results for students taking the SAT, ACT, GRE or GMAT. I teach students how to get into the "heads" of the test makers and use the knowledge that since these tests are "standardized" there can ONLY be ONE right answer. The best method for determining the right answer, then, is often to just know how to eliminate all the wrong answers! For math problems, I have a systematic approach on how to solve even the most difficult of questions. For example, there are a very limited number of actual math concepts needed to do exceptionally well on the SAT; but the trick is knowing how to spot the "type" of math question it is and the best "strategy" for approaching the solution.
Lately, I have seen AMAZING results from my students in SAT, ACT, GMAT, AND GRE! I am delighted to see how many not only get into their top choice schools, but also receive scholarships and awards based on their good scores They have put in all the hard work, but I am their "cheerleader" -- hoping to inspire them to greater victories!
NO MORE MATH ANXIETY!
I especially take pride in tutoring math to high school girls, who in my experience learn math differently than boys and may often experience "math anxiety." Even though I was an English major at Berkeley, I LOVE math and have taught many others to love it, too!
WRITING and WORDS, WORDS, WORDS!!
Does ANYONE learn grammar in grammar school anymore? Not from what I have seen recently... I was fortunate enough to have learned good grammar early on and love showing people the REAL rules of writing, as opposed to the rules that govern such tantalizing constructions as: "BRB" and "LOL!"
One of my happiest teaching moments came when a student received a perfect score on his ACT essay - a 12 out of 12! But what made it especially sweet was the fact that the very first sentence he said to me had been "I HATE writing essays!" (It turns out, however, that he just had never been shown an easy way to construct the prefect standardized test essay.)
I also strive to engender in my students a love of WORDS. Every new student receives a gift on the first day - a little pocket-sized moleskine notebook (in one of 12 colors of his or her choosing) in which to jot down new vocabulary words. If anyone stumps me, I give them a quarter per word. (I still have my original jar of quarters, although I must admit I have had to give out a few! I don't allow "Level 60" freerice.com words any more!)
I also am happy to assist students in polishing their school entrance essays and statements. In fact, a recent student "tested out" of having to take any college English as a result of the essay she wrote during the summer prior to her freshman year of college. Since she was pre-med, getting to check this off her requirements list on Day 1, helped her to cram more biology and chemistry classes in... lucky her! :-)
I look forward to meeting you and working with you to accomplish your learning goals! I promise that if you do your part, I will meet you more than half way and we can achieve fantastic results together!

Thanks to Donna, I feel confident and have less anxiety because I am prepared for the test. Donna is so very nice and supportive and very, very smart.
We hired Donna to help our son improve his ACT score. He originally scored 26. After tutoring with Donna, he scored a 31! We were very pleased with his progress and with Donna's work.

Thank you, Nicole! It is students like you that make me LOVE what I do! :-)
Donna does a fantastic job of explaining problems when I have trouble understanding things. She is very outgoing and I have no problem feeling comfortable asking for clarification or additional questions. I would recommend her to anyone from a younger student who needs help with the basics to someone like myself, a college graduate studying for the GMAT.
Thank you, Hank! It is easy to do a good job when I have such an energized and dedicated student such as yourself. That is my favorite type of student to teach - I can just sit by and watch you take off and grow! (Of course, when you got here you were already almost 7 feet tall... tee hee!)
I know you will continue to do GREAT things in life!
Donna helped me work through a number of questions I was having difficulty on with my last practice exam. She was fantastic in her explanations and she has significantly helped in my problem solving capability. I look forward to working with her again soon!
Thank you for the kind words. I was delighted to be a part of your journey, and I know BOLD and BRIGHT things are in store for you in the future!

Thanks! I ran into Brooke yesterday and was thrilled to hear about all the exciting opportunities she has for college! SO PROUD of her - what a great kid! :-)
My son has been not only enjoying his lessons with Donna but also has been motivated to study during the summer (great feat) without my nagging him....
Thank you Shoobha! Your son is a GREAT student - I do not know many other teenagers who would actually take all their SAT Test Prep books to Hawaii on vacation with them! :-)
Donna helped Cason study for a pre-nursing standardized test. She identified lots of material geared for the particular test which was no easy feat as there was no one book that was consistent with the test. Donna was patient in working with my daughter. She is highly recommended.
Thanks for the kind words, Hollie! Best of luck to Cason!!
She's very focused and has the ability to determine what needs are most prevalent. She also has a very personable way with our son.
Thank you, Gary!
Donna helped me out of a very tight spot with a real estate math class I was taking. She helped me tremendously in overcoming my "blind spot" when it comes to learning math. I am much more comfortable with the math problems, and would definitely recommend her.
As an update, not only did I pass my class, I didn't miss a single math question! And, I passed my state licensure exam as well. Donna's understanding of my long-term "math phobia" helped me calm down my emotions and actually understand the math. I can't thank her enough!
Thanks so much for your kind words and CONGRATULATIONS on getting all your Real Estate licenses!! You will make an AWESOME Realtor!
- Donna :-)
I have been in the process of applying to graduate school. I had taken the GRE three previous times, and did not make the scores I needed (just two points short). I worked with Donna while I was home over winter break. Donna was very helpful as she provided me some insight and new ways of approaching questions. With her help, I was able to raise my score by 5 points! I definitely recommend Donna as a tutor. You will learn and become more confident in taking your tests.
Thank you, Eric! And congratulations on your full scholarship!! Way to go - You DID it! :-)
Donna has worked with my daughter on math skills. Currently she's in college and needed help in all of the math subject areas. Donna worked with her tirelessly and thoroughly. My daughter actually enjoyed going to tutoring! That's a first! They spent time reviewing material so my daughter could pass the placement test and not be stuck in remedial math classes. She was nurturing and caring but diligent in covering everything. My daughter passed the placement test and achieved her goal! Donna made that happen. She presented math in a way that my daughter understood and provided an overall review before she took the test. Donna had a plan that took my daughter through the steps in a logical but not boring way to learn these math skills. My husband and I are so pleased with Donna and her professionalism and knowledge and support of our daughter. I highly recommend Donna for tutoring! We are hoping that she can continue to tutor our daughter in all subject areas on a weekly basis for college class support.
Thank you, Valery. I thoroughly enjoyed working with your daughter! She was so determined and dedicated and it paid off in the end. I do not know who was happier, she or I, when she passed the Accuplacer Test! I am so proud. Thank you for your kind remarks.
- Donna K
I thoroughly love Donna's attention to detail. Prior to our first session, Donna met with my daughter and I for over an hour. Her notes after each session are very detailed and outline my daughter's progress.
Donna is an amazing SAT tutor! She really prepared my son well for the test. Donna was positive, motivational and organized. She kept the lessons focused and encouraged my son as he prepared for the test. He enjoyed the lessons with Donna and we could see a huge improvement in his essay writing and overall readiness for the test. I highly recommend Donna!!
My daughter loved working with Donna as she prepared for the ACT. Donna is knowledgeable in all subject areas for the ACT. She took time to access where my daughter had deficiencies and then utilized different resources to engage my daughter in learning. She provided constant feedback to me and to my daughter as to where she needed to spend time improving a skill(s). My daughter was very confident in taking the ACT after spending this time with Donna. I would definitely use Donna for any future tutoring needs!
Excellent tutor! Very knowledgeable in all content areas. Was instrumental in improving GRE score. Wish we had found her earlier! Don't hesitate to contact Donna.
Donna was an excellent tutor for my two girls. She assessed them and talked to each one to determine their strengths and weaknesses. She provided differentiated instruction to keep each lesson fresh and to appeal to each of their individual learning styles. iPhone apps, books, flash cards, and computer programs were used to boost their SAT skills. My girls felt comfortable with Donna and never complained about being tutored twice a week. I would highly recommend Donna as a tutor for any high school course or standardized test.
Donna is a great tutor and really knows her stuff. I've taken the the GRE in the past and did poorly, but she helped me improve my score after getting tutoring sessions from her. She is very passionate about teaching. Not only does she want her clients to do well on their exams/test, she wants them to really understand the material that is being taught. She helped me find new ways to learn vocabulary. She even prepares a whole lesson before you arrive for your session that is catered to your needs. She is also caring and will check on you from time to time to see if you need any extra assistance. Overall, she is the best tutor I've ever had and will definitely call on her if I need further help in the future. I will definitely recommend others to see her.
Jahquiis, you are too kind! It's easy to be a good tutor when you have such a hard-working and devoted student!
Best of luck to you, always!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Let's face it… Algebra 2 is super hard! At least it was for me when I was in high school… But I have struggled to make it EASIER for others! I understand where kids get hung up, and I've tried to find simplified ways to explain complex concepts... If one can break it down into its most fundamental components, solving complex math problems can actually be quite enjoyable! Like most math courses, Algebra 2 requires a solid understanding of all of the math fundamentals that were taught in courses before it. A mastery of Algebra 2 also is essential to success in more complex math courses to follow, such as Precalculus and Calculus. I taught high school math in a private school in California and have been tutoring high school math in North Carolina now for several years. I'd love to help you start improving your Algebra 2 test scores today!
Having worked in a corporate environment for many years, Donna became very adept at many forms of Desktop Publishing software - MS Publisher, MS Powerpoint, MS Word, and Adobe Framemaker. She was the editor of a monthly newsletter that went out to all tax professionals in the firm of Price Waterhouse. She also published a neighborhood newsletter for many years. She has a strong sense of artistry, design, and layout, and she understands the importance of "white space." Furthermore, Donna's diploma with highest honors in English from UC Berkeley, allows Donna to offer her clients the added benefit of grammatical and proof-reading expertise!
I taught in a private school in Marin County, California for several years. The school was Carden Marin School and utilized the highly successful "Mae Carden method," which is utilized in Carden Schools throughout the world. I specifically taught kindergarten, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades, as well as high school math, French and art. I am a graduate with honors from The University of California, Berkeley (1983). I have also worked as a technology consultant for over 20 years, but am really enjoying tutoring now.

The ability to express oneself in writing - whether creatively or persuasively or in an expository manner - is an expertise that is essential in today's world. In an era where most every idea seems to be reduced to 140-character "tweets," the ability to write (and write well) can make a student really stand out from the crowd!
Furthermore, strong critical reading skills and the ability to analyze what has been read are assets that will last a lifetime and ensure future success in all walks of life.
Donna graduated with highest honors from the University of Calif at Berkeley with a degree in English. She has published creative writing and she enjoys teaching children in a fun and creative manner.
Whether one wishes to get a top score on the SAT Writing and reading tests or improve one's grades in English class or merely just learn to enjoy reading and writing more, Donna has the tools and techniques to help students develop to their full potential.
Using creative writing "patterns," as well as formal essay writing techniques and processes, Donna has taught many students how to succeed in writing well.
Furthermore, contrary to what some people may think, good critical reading skills CAN be taught! Like most things worth doing, it takes some practice, but for a student willing to put in some effort and follow a few simple guidelines, reading comprehension can be increased ten-fold.

Donna is fluent in 2 languages - French and English and, as such, she recognizes the struggles inherent in learning a language that is not one's own native tongue. This sympathy makes her especially qualified to help others striving to become fluent in another language. Lastly, her deep knowledge of the structure of the English language and its grammar and syntax is especially helpful to newly-speaking English students. She graduated with highest honors in English at Univ of Calif, Berkeley, and also taught at a private grammar school that specialized in grammatical accuracy and competency.
Donna began taking French lessons when she was 7 years old, then continued on throughout grammar school, junior high, high school and University to refine her French skills. She has traveled extensively in France and most recently submerged herself with a native French-speaker in Paris for 3 weeks to further master the common everyday vernacular. She has taught French to grade school as well as high school children, and always strives to keep learning fun and natural, in accordance with the latest and best practices for foreign language learning. Allons-y!! (Let's go!)

I have taught grammar school in a school that actually focused VERY intensely on GRAMMAR! I have tutored the English portion of the SAT and ACT tests successfully to many students. I know the difference between "which" and "that," and between "effect" and "affect!" I know the 8 parts of speech (9 if you count "articles" separately!) I can tell at a glance an appositive from an apostrophe, and I am here to help you master all of these enigmas!
The GRE test is a 3 hour and 45 minute exam that covers three sections of knowledge assessment – Analytical Writing Assessment, Quantitative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning.

I graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with highest honors with a bachelor's degree in English. I wrote my 110-page Honors Thesis on the humor found in the Beat Poetry of the 1950's poet, John O'Hara. I have taught English at a private school in California, and am currently a writer in Charlotte, NC. I LOVE American and English literature of all genres - novels, poetry, essays, children's works, epics, romances, and adventures. I have taken numerous college level courses on everything from Beowulf and Chaucer and Shakespeare through to all manner of modern English literature. At one point in my life, I even endeavored to memorize all of Shakespeare's 154 sonnets!
The key to tutoring in Literature is not only to be able to show students an appreciation of the reading of fine works, but also, to help them attain the ability to relate those works to one's own life and to be able to write essays expressing opinions about these works. I would love to share my love of literature with YOU as well as teach you how to be successful in your coursework.

I have been certified in the Mae Carden educational system whose reading and spelling curriculum is entirely built upon a structured application of phonics. Students learn spelling through the Carden "controls", a set of rules for deconstructing a word into its basic phonic parts, presented in such a way that the students are able to remember how and why a word is spelled the way it is and to also explain the reasons why certain groupings of letters are pronounced differently. In addition, the controls are accompanied by a vowel chart, which groups sounds into natural phonic clusters.
Using this method, I taught school at a private school in California full- and part-time over a period of 7 years. My students consistently scored at the top percentiles of their peer groups on the end-of-year standardized tests, including in reading comprehension and spelling.
Pre-algebra is very important for developing a solid foundation for future math classes! Donna has taught math to elementary through high school grades and tutored everything from beginning math to Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Pre-calculus. Her students consistently elevate their course grades as well as their standardized testing scores.
Having been a high school math teacher in California and now having been a math tutor for many years here in NC, I have seen the "anxiety" that Pre-calculus can often cause students! Often, this comes from being introduced to advanced topics, before the student has mastered the building blocks necessary for forming a strong math foundation. My method seeks to establish a solid understanding of why we do what we do in math, and not just have students memorize random formulas! I especially aim to build up students' self-confidence in math, which only continues to grow once they find themselves succeeding in understanding what was once a mystery!
I have been tutoring how to solve Probability problems on the ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, State Core Competency Exams, and Accuplacer College Math Placement Tests for many years now. Probability has many different facets and applications. Obviously it has its uses in Math, but it is also useful in Business, the Social and Physical Sciences, Statistics and nearly every other academic subject. At its most basic level, it is simply the likelihood of an event to take place.
The PSAT tests a student's abilities in critical reading, math, and writing skills. It is good practice for the SAT test which is typically taken the following year. By taking the PSAT, a student is also entered into the competition for national merit scholarship funds.
I have extensive experience tutoring students preparing to take both the SAT math, reading, and writing tests, as well as ACT tests. The PSAT falls into the same category of "standardized testing" and, as such, there are many "tricks of the trade" that can be learned in order to achieve the greatest possibility of success. I not only prepare the students in the necessary subject areas, but also relay important time management and test taking strategies that will significantly improve a student's overall score.
Reading -- comprehension, analysis, and enjoyment -- are all cornerstones for building a great education. From the youngest students who are just learning phonics and "how to read" through high school students seeking to hone their reading skills in preparation for the SAT, I have taught all levels of reading. I graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with honors in English and have a strong love of language and literature. I would love to help your child experience that same level of reading satisfaction!
The SAT Math test covers: Numbers and operations; algebra and functions; Geometry and measurement; and Data analysis, statistics, and probability. I have taught high school math as well as tutored extensively in areas ranging from algebra, geometry, and trigonometry up through pre-calculus. Getting a good score, even a GREAT score, on the SAT is just a matter of being very familiar with actually a very limited set of mathematical concepts. I quickly determine where my students are getting "stuck" and then work on gaining mastery of those areas. Math can actually be fun!
I have tutored many students studying to take the SAT Reading test, with proven results - higher scores of at least 20 - 30 % on every subject!
I have taught these skills as a teacher in a private school in California and I have a degree in English from the University of California/Berkeley, from which I graduated with highest honors.
Unlike most people, I adore taking standardized tests and score consistently in the highest percentiles on them! I can show your student how to have the same success!
I will also go over many tricks and tips that are useful for improving one's success rate on the SAT Reading test. I have taught many children how to spell!! Although it may not seem like it at times, the English language does have a systematic and phonetically based system for learning to spell correctly. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule! However, if one learns the basics and then memorizes the exceptions, a complete mastery is guaranteed! Knowing word origins and foreign influences on our language also helps to decipher many words.
Wyzant requires a subject matter test be completed to qualify for tutoring the SSAT test. It must be completed in around 30 minutes and be 70% correct to pass. I completed the test in far less time with a 100% passing grade. Furthermore, I, myself, passed the actual SSAT test to enter an elite private college preparatory school in Ross, California with scores in the 99 percentiles. Later in life, both my sons, accomplished the same feat while attending Providence Day School here in Charlotte. Unlike most people, I adore taking standardized tests and I can show others how to have the same success! In addition to solid knowledge of the subject matter being tested, there are many tricks and tips that are useful for improving one's success rates on these types of test. Let me show your children how!
Being an English major from the University of California at Berkeley, I obviously adore the English language, its literature, and its structure. I have taught grammar school with an emphasis on old-fashioned grammar! I have tutored many students on the English portions of the SAT and ACT tests. I currently am fluent in English and near-fluent in French - so understand the struggles of a non-native speaker trying to comprehend strange grammatical and syntactical structures! I promise to work with you to make learning English fun and rewarding! Click on my profile to learn more!
Donna adores words, language and nuances between definitions. She also can help students prepping for many standardized tests that include vocabulary words by showing them secrets, tips and tricks to learning large quantities of words in a rapid manner. And on top of all this, she makes it FUN! And that would be super-duper-fragi-listic-ex-pi-al-i-do-cious! (...which is a made up word, of course!)
