About Jesse

Hey, my name is Jesse. I am currently a senior in college and have loved to teach others fun and interesting ways to understand math and math based sciences. I am currently attempting to obtain my doctorate in physics, to then become a professor in the field. One of the many reasons I want to be a professor is because I love teaching people new ways to understand difficult topics.

I have a good amount of experience with tutors and some experience tutoring or teaching classes. In high school I would commonly come in to teach a class of days that certain teachers were unavailable. Before every test, in my science and math courses, I would hold a tutoring session for anyone to participate in. And on a regular basis I meet with current classmates to help them reinforce ideas and topics that they may be struggling with.

One thing I have learned through my interactions with other students and even professors is that everyone's brain works in a different way, that no two people think the same way, meaning not all teaching methods work for every child. However, I know of ways to attempt to break ideas down to their most general form, allowing for an easier learning period. I have had positive results using my methods from the high school classes I have tutored and form the teachers I tutored for. And while I cannot guarantee that my method will work for every student or fix every problem, I am willing to do whatever I can to help a struggling student.

Depending on the subject will also change on which way I approach each tutoring session. For example, if someone requires help on the SAT or ACT, I would begin by teaching to the test. What I mean by this is, I will teach the skills required to succeed on the test since that is where the majority of your points can come from. However if I am teaching for a specific class, I would begin by making sure the necessary groundwork has been laid, the most basic skills needed, to make sure every idea can be built off of the last and that a student isn't struggling because of not understanding the prior knowledge, knowledge taught before that class.

I am a very understanding and open minded person, someone who understands that not everyone starts on an equal playing ground and that things can come up. I know people can have person issues to deal with and that some may view the material as "boring" but I can always work to help with that. One of the most important parts of teaching someone is not making them learn the knowledge but to make them enjoy learning it. Students are much more likely to succeed if they are inspired and receive a feeling of accomplishment from doing well, not from being scolded for doing poorly which is why I would never be upset with a student who applies themselves, regardless of the end results.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is the start of higher level maths. It is the first time where you learn how to solve a problem that is more than just memorizing of values. And you have to make sure this basis is taught well and understood as perfectly as possible. I can not only make sure that a student understands the basics but is ready for higher level maths.

Algebra 2

As with most of my math classes, I got an A in Algebra 2 when I took it in 6th grade. I had a way of understanding math, which is easy to teach, that was different than what the teacher was attempting to teach the class but mine was more accurate on a larger scale basis, i.e. her way applied for specific examples while mine was for math as a whole and could be used in later courses.

I enrolled in my first calculus course as a freshman in college; at the end of the course my overall grade was an A. Since then I have been enrolled in calculus 2, 3, and 4. I earned an A average in these courses as well. In addition to the classes I have taken, I have also tutored many calculus students. My junior year in college I was a teacher's assistant for calculus 1 and 2. During my time as a TA I held optional tutoring sessions for all of the students enrolled in those classes three times per week; the student who showed up to these sessions scored above average grades in the course. Other than my teacher's assistant position, I have tutored a number of calculus students one on one. These students were enrolled in courses ranging from high school calculus to calculus 2.

Discrete Math

I took discrete math in high school. I got not only an A but the highest grade in the class. Overall it is a very easy class if you know how to approach the problem and I know how to teach someone to approach the problem.

Elementary Math

Math has always been the subject that I understood the best. I have always excelled in math and I am majoring in a subject, physics, that uses math to explain how things actually work and interact.

Every physics course I have taken at UNCC I got an A in and I have personally tutored for several of the physics courses at UNCC.

The pre-algebra math course I not only passes with an A but also mastered, causing me to be properly prepared for all sequential math courses, which do build off the past ones.

My sophomore year of high school I took a precalculus course and scored an A overall. Later, during my freshman year of college, I enrolled in a college level precalculus course and also scored an A. Additionally, during my time as a tutor, I have taught precalculus two times to two different students; both students improved in the course and met their grade goal.

I've taken, and aced, numerous calculus classes. I have also worked as a teacher's assistant in many college level calculus classes. While working as a teacher's assistance I held tutoring sessions for the class multiple times a week. In addition, I have tutored many students one on one in trigonometry.
