UNCC (Math - Education)
I am a retired high school math teacher, with 6 years of classroom experience who works best with both nontraditional learners and 'high performance' students. Sessions provide instruction that matches the course requirements and school expectations. Alternatively, I offer special students a broad and rigorous math seminar. Tutoring sessions are available Monday - Friday in the morning, afternoon and evening.
Some of my students were described as 'struggling', 'confused by classroom instruction', 'unsuccessful with college tutors' or 'having a different learning style', we overcame these false starts with A's and B's (check the feedback section). I have personal experience students categorized as have gifted, dyslexia, ADD / ADHD or ESL issues. My student's parents tell me I'm "Professional and Patient", "Excellent, expert" and "engaging and easygoing".
Sessions are oriented towards the student's needs. Attention is given to 1) remediation - learning supporting skills, 2) reinforcement - review topics covered in the classroom/text and 3) enrichment - providing links to real world examples and uses of mathematics. I demonstrate standard calculator techniques, highlight anticipated testing questions, and proven study skills that correspond to the student's preferences and learning style.
I develop a student's confidence while avoiding the 'by the numbers' or a cookbook approach to learning math. We focus on understanding and comprehension to achieve rigor.
I enjoy teaching algebra, geometry, discrete math, pre-calculus, advanced functions and modeling, college math, SAT Math and basic statistics. Prior to teaching, I had a variety of roles in information technology. I am a retired high school math teacher, with 6 years of classroom experience who works best with both nontraditional learners and 'high performance' students. Sessions provide instruction that matches the course requirements and school expectations. Alternatively, I offer special students a
cancellation 3 days in advance or 50% cancellation charge.
After just 4 sessions, my son has seen positive results in his grades and his confidence. Stephen's style allows for very easy dialogue and interaction.
Thanks for the kinds words, your son deserves credit for staying focused and completing the work.
Steve's mastery of the subject matter, his strong inter-personal skills, and his knowledge of teachers and teaching methods has been invaluable to us. Steve genuinely cares about my son's learning, in a way that is obvious and helpful for my son as he makes his challenging transition to middle school. We couldn't be happier with the excellent job Steve is doing.
Stephen is perfect for our family he has patience and subject matter expertise to accelerate our child. It was a pleasure to watch our child enjoy the lesson.
Mr. Steven G. rang our door bell at 12:30 PM and ended his lesson precisely at 1:18 PM, after checking his watch. Besides charging for the full hour and cutting his lesson short, he seems to be a very good tutor.
Jessica is grasping the concepts of her math even with a class that has behavioral problems. Her grade has gone from an F to a high B!
My 8th grade son is taking Math II this year for high school credit and was struggling due to some missed content from grade skipping as well as the impact of his ADHD and Aspergers. His teacher at school is good, but not the best personality fit for my son and he tunes in and out when he's in class. Steve has been tutoring my son for several weeks now and I've seen a huge transformation for the better in my son's attitude toward math. Steve does a great job of connecting with my son and explaining the math concepts in a way that is both entertaining and empowering. My son now waits at the door when it's time for Steve to arrive, peeking out the window to watch for him, and even has questions ready that he feels more comfortable asking Steve rather than raising his hand and asking his teacher in front of other students. He's completing more of his homework and doing better with keeping track of his assignments and notes for this class as well. I think that having Steve tutor him on a weekly basis gives my son the self-confidence to know that he CAN succeed in this class, and when he gets in trouble with math he is not going to be left on his own to figure it out.
Thank you for the kind words; Your son also deserves credit for doing the needed work.
My son is our second student to tutor with Stephen. After two sessions, I am amazed how engaged my son is. He has ADHD and sometimes misses critical information in class, but when working with Stephen he is totally focused. His confidence in his own ability has increased greatly. I believe he will be very successful in his Advanced Functions and Modeling with continued assistance from Stephen. We are very grateful.
Thank you. The credit also belongs to your children and in part to your supportive parenting skills.
Stephen has been a great fit working with our son and has shown amazing patience. He is excellent at taking complex problems and breaking them down into steps that our son can relate and connect with. His calm and even demeanor and his ability to relate to our son and how he thinks and problem solves has been excellent.
We would highly recommend Stephen to other families/students looking for a great math tutor and look forward to continuing to work with him through this school year.
Stephen is engaging, professional, caring with a wonderful sense of humor. My son can be at ease while learning concepts that have been difficult for him to grasp in the past. My son has already had improvement in quiz/test grades after only 4 sessions!!! We look forward to working with him on a continuous basis. Thanks Stephen!
Steve jumped right in and began tutoring from day one, on target, and with real concrete help to my son who is in the 5th grade. We hired Steve to tutor in math for a really bright child who has some issues with explaining his work. Steve has gone above and beyond my expectations by helping our son with current math, homework, advanced math, background understanding, explaining the math concepts, how to document and write up his answers so the teacher will be pleased. Steve has done a great job and could handle any tutoring assignment.
My son has had 5 lessons with Stephen and all have been very good. On his first test after working with Stephen, he got a 96 on his test. Previously he was failing almost every quiz and test. His first quarter grade was a D. This quarter he has a B. Stephen has helped him understand the material and establish techniques to apply when doing homework and taking tests. My son is relieved that he is now succeeding. We are very pleased that we found Stephen to help him.
Thank you for taking the time to create this feedback. I'll share the credit with your son; he's the one who did the work. I hope this is teaching him a life lesson about persistence, learning styles and results.
After the first couple of sessions, I am confident our son should benefit. Stephen offered good review and some concrete tips. We are seeing improvement on a most recent test grade!
Stephen was fantastic with my son. He was engaging, and thorough in finding out where my son was in class and what exactly needed work. He made difficult concepts understandable, then he worked through several problems to make sure my son got the formulas. He understands what is going on in the classroom so that he can further teach
my son. He was calm, and patient, and mostly seemed to care about helping my son. Hes become a continuous tutor for us. He also is immediate at communicating with us. Very professional.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught Discrete Math for 3 years, from 2008 - 2010 in Charlotte NC (CMS - East Mecklenburg High School). We used the textbook "For All Practical Purposes: Mathematical Literacy in Today's World," Comap - Freedman and Company versions 6 & 7 which is in compliance with NC standards.
I attended summer training in Discrete Math at UNCC 2006 that used "Discrete Math for Teachers" Houghton Muffin Company, Wheeler and Brawner. I completed prior studies in Operations Research dating back to 1970. As a programmer I developed linear programming models and econometric modeling.
