About Linda

I am passionate about education, and I love tutoring. I enjoy the one-to-one relationship I have with my students and the opportunity to tailor material to each student's individual needs. I enjoy making learning fun because I believe that students learn best when they are relaxed and comfortable. I would love to help you improve your English skills, write your high school senior paper, prepare for the SAT/ACT exams, and write your college essay, I can also help you with organization and study skills. I have extensive experience using research based strategies and methods for instruction and making the material relevant.

I am a retired high school English teacher and college professor of cultural anthropology. I have a Master's Degree in cultural anthropology from the University of New Mexico and have completed graduate coursework at the University of New Hampshire for ESOL certification.

I hold myself to a high standard and for that reason I often ask for feedback from my students. I am flexible with scheduling, however I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy. If student cancels less than 24 hours prior to a lesson, a cancellation fee of 50% will be assessed. I look forward to working with you towards your success in furthering your education.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have 15 years' experience teaching English to high school and college students. I have prepared high school students for the English portion of the ACT by teaching strategies for taking standardized tests and for writing a timed essay. I have taught all types of writing from a short, 3-paragraph essay to a 10-page research paper, and I have helped students write their college essays.

ACT Reading

I help students improve their ACT reading scores by teaching critical reading, finding the main idea, understanding the author's purpose, and increasing vocabulary. I provide students with ample practice of ACT reading passages and questions. Most importantly, I teach test-taking strategies that will help my students approach the test with confidence and improve their scores.

ESL/ESOL

I am a certified ESOL teacher and Highly Qualified English Teacher for grades 7-12.
I have a Master's Degree in cultural anthropology and post graduate study in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Through my anthropology education, research fieldwork, and teaching experiences, I have gained an understanding of how a student's culture can impact learning. I have 15 years' experience teaching adults, university students, and high school students. I have taught refugees and immigrants from more than 20 different language groups and cultures. Many of these students have successfully completed high school, and gone on to earn college degrees.

Reading

I help students improve their reading skills by teaching critical thinking, finding the main idea, understanding the author's purpose, and vocabulary. I provide students ample practice with reading passages and comprehension questions. Most importantly, I teach students how to make personal connections to the text. Connecting to the text is fundamental to reading comprehension.

SAT Reading

I help students improve their SAT reading scores by teaching critical reading, finding the main idea, understanding the author's purpose, and increasing vocabulary. I provide students with ample practice of SAT reading passages and questions. Most importantly, I teach test-taking strategies that will help my students approach the test with confidence and improve their scores.

SAT Writing

I have 15 years' experience teaching writing to high school and college students. I have prepared students for the writing portion of the SAT and ACT by teaching strategies for writing a timed essay and building confidence in their writing skills. I have taught all types of writing from a short, 3-paragraph essay to a 10-page research paper, and I have helped students write their college essays.

Study Skills

My philosophy is: External order = internal order. I taught and tutored refugee high school students for nine years. Many of them had no previous formal education or understanding of time management. Teaching these students organization and study skills was my first priority. I have successfully helped students learn to organize and prioritize their work using time management, note-taking tips, agendas, and school or teacher web sites. Most importantly, I encourage students to be self-directed learners.

Writing

I have 15 years' experience teaching writing to high school and college students. I have taught all types of writing from a short, 3-paragraph essay to a 20-page research paper, and I have helped students write their college essays. As a graduate student in Cultural Anthropology, I had extensive experience in academic writing. I've written grant applications and research proposals for faculty, committee, and Internal Review Board approval. I have conducted several field research projects and written reports for presentations at professional meetings.

Consistently outstanding — Linda has worked with our daughter in preparation for the English portion of the ACT test. Working with her weekly, she provided consistent, high quality reviews with her. She provided constructive test taking strategies and advice and worked to strengthen her weaker areas. She reinforces her strengths but did not waste time focusing on what she has mastered. Our daughter looked forward to her ...
