A state certified educator and current 3rd grade teacher, I may be the ideal tutor for your elementary student. I am a graduate of Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, where I earned a degree in Elementary Education in 2010. I returned to Furman to complete a master's degree in Education. I also earned an endorsement in Gifted and Talented education and have had extensive training in challenging students at an appropriate level so that they learn and grow. I am in my sixth year as a teacher and have experience working in all grades K-5, including experience with individuals who have special needs.
I favor a hands-on, real-world approach to teaching, where I facilitate understanding with your child. My experience in the classroom has provided me with a "toolbox" of real world, concrete examples for the topics your child might be struggling with. I will help them discover how to think like a problem-solver and use a variety of strategies to tackle difficult tasks. My specific methods will be individualized for your child and tailored to their needs and learning style preferences. I want tutoring to be enjoyable for your child so you may find that I will bring cards, games, or number and counting blocks with me.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

As an elementary teacher for more than six years, I have a great deal of experience helping students become successful in math. I have had extensive training in guided math, which is an approach that helps meet students where they are and challenge them at an appropriate pace so that they increase their knowledge. I also have a variety of activities and games that can help your child learn basic math facts and develop the number sense that is essential for success in math.
As a professional educator, I am competent in phonics instruction. My previous position was in a Kindergarten classroom, where a huge emphasis was placed on phonics. I understand how to help students' develop phonemic awareness so that they understand the correspondence of letters with sounds and can then apply those to their speech and spelling. Phonics instruction is very important for beginning readers as understanding this correspondence will help them be able to decode unfamiliar words when learning to read independently.
As a professional educator, I have taken the Praxis tests to become certified. I scored in the top 90% when taking my own Praxis tests and was awarded the Praxis Award for Excellence in 2010 for my outstanding scores.

Spelling can be a tricky subject for so many kids! In order to help it make sense, I will bring many fun and creative ways for your child to learn English spelling patterns so that they can use them when reading and writing...and to pass that school spelling test! My background as an elementary teacher with numerous training opportunities in word study and phonics techniques will guarantee I can help your child gain success in spelling.
